YouTube enters online movie rental business

YouTube seems to be in the spotlight a whole lot today, what with HTML5 support as well as its Music Discovery Project, and here we have news of it entering the online movie rental business from January 22nd onwards. Don’t expect a huge library of films at first though – there will only be five up for rent available, and they are part of the nominees at the 2009 and 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Oh yeah, take note that this service will be available in the US only. All but one of the Sundance films is going for $3.99 each, where you have a 2-day grace period before the viewing window expires. It remains to be seen whether this venture will finally be the breakthrough that Google has been looking for in monetizing YouTube, but it is a start.
