Braille display offers new way for blind to see the Internet

The visually impaired often have a pretty hard time with modern technology, least of all the ability to use the Internet. Well, a team of researchers from the North Carolina State University are currently looking into a new prototype hydraulic and latching mechanism for a refreshable Braille display which will enable the raising of dots to the correct height, making it easily read. This display’s latching mechanism also supports weight being applied by a person’s fingers as the dots are read, featuring a zippy respond time that enables one to scroll through a document or Web site in a jiffy. It is nice to see such technology catering to the less able bodied among us, and we do hope that such displays will be cheap enough for the masses when produced. Check out our past stories on Braille concepts and devices.
