The NAMO (Novel Articulated MObile platform) humanoid robot did not come from Japan surprisingly, as it hails from Thailand instead courtesy of The Institute of Field Robotics (FIBO) at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi. NAMO will not see action on the battlefield as it is a peacetime robot, welcoming people to public places such as universities as well as acting as a museum guide. It could also be used to further research human robot interaction and communication due to its kind natured appearance. Boasting 16 degrees of freedom, NAMO is not threatening at 130cm in height, getting around on a stable three-wheeled omnidirectional base with a Blackfin camera for its vision system. It is smart enough to perform simple gesture recognition, and can track humans or objects of interest visually in an automatic manner while speaking in Thai.
