European Parliament: ‘We were told the iPads would actually cut costs’

Yes, you read that right: while there is a serious debt crisis happening there, lawmakers in Europe have been talking about “investing” in iPads to replace their recently acquired HP laptops because they are too “cumbersome”. “We could get rid of our old PCs, some of which have outdated software such as Microsoft Word 2003” an insider told the Times.

Sure, and you’ll replace Word with iWorks for iPad? And what about printing the stuff that you have been typing…? Apparently, Klaus Welle, the parliament’s German secretary is the one pushing the idea and I’m just about sure that many lawmakers are excited about it. However, I would like to hear what taxpayers and the parliament IT staff have to say on the subject (not that it matters, apparently). But wait — wouldn’t that be a boost in productivity to give each of them an iPad 3G with 64GB? Well, Marta Andreasen who sits in the budget committee might have the answer: “many of the older MEPs don’t even know how to use the Internet properly”. Wow… just wow.
