Sony to take on iPad in its own backyard

Sony to take on iPad in its own backyard

Sony knows a threat when they see one, and has just set their crosshairs on Apple’s iPad with news of an e-reader launch in Japan before the year is over which will be accompanied by an online content distribution service. This is a reaction that might be wee bit too late, considering the iPad is purported to hit Japanese store shelves tomorrow. Apart from Japan, Sony has plans to release its e-book operations in China, Australia, Spain and Italy this year as well. In order to make a splash in the Japanese market, Sony will team up with telecoms operator KDDI Corp, printing firm Toppan Printing Co and the Asahi Shimbun newspaper to set up a planning company in order to prep the service which will include book, comic, magazine and newspaper content to subscribers. Sony claims that the breadth of available content is more important than time to market, which is why it isn’t too worried about the iPad’s impending launch. Do you think Sony has what it takes to win this race?
