Garmin flies high with G500H Helicopter Flight Display

When you mention Garmin, we wouldn’t be surprised if the GPS acronym were to pop up in your mind. Well, the company aims for something a whole lot higher this time round with the Garmin G500H Helicopter Flight Display that has just received approval from the FAA. This all-glass avionics system was specially designed for VFR Part 27 helicopters, where you can either view its display on the left or right, showing off attitude, airspeed, vertical speed, altitude and heading information at a glance. Apart from that, other information which can be gleaned include moving maps, the helicopter’s current position in relation to terrain, chart data, and flight plan routings. Of course, you can be sure that the Garmin G500H Helicopter Flight Display won’t come cheap considering the vehicle it is connected to is at least a few hundred grand, so touting a sticker price of $25,000 shouldn’t come across as a shock for anybody. After all, your $20,000 car uses a GPS navigation system that is 10% its price, right? Same principle applies here.

Based on market research firm NPD, that category now includes both tablets and laptops -- and by that definition, Apple is unsurprisingly way earlier than its competitors. According to its preliminary numbers, Apple shipped 23.4 million mobile PCs within the fourth quarter of 2011 (nearly 80 percent of which have been iPads), which was enough… »
