Custom Android interfaces could be a thing of the past

Skinning an operating system supposedly adds character to a device, and it might enhance (or otherwise if done badly) the overall user experience. HTC has their Sense UI, while Samsung is rocking to the TouchWiz UI with Motorola leaning on the MOTOBLUR UI, but all of these could very well be relegated to a thing of the past with Google planning to put an end to custom Android interfaces with its next major release. We’re talking about Android 3.0 here, also known as Gingerbread. Going this way could very well do away with the OS fragmentation issue which currently is the bane of Android, and having something uniform might place the Android platform on par with the iPhone OS in terms of having updates available across all handsets at time of release.
