California license plates to get digital ads?

Legislators in California might be able to turn motorists’ license plates into mobile digital ads in the near future, if a measure proposed by Senator Curren Price is passed. If that happens, California will be the first state that relies on electronic license plates that can flash ads whenever a vehicle stops at a red light, in a move to help out the state’s cash-strapped economy. The plates will be developed by San Francisco startup Smart Plate, where it will work in a similar setup as with electronic billboards that are currently seen all over the interstates. At least the license plate number will remain visible at all times, and who are we to say that some smart aleck won’t go about to hack the license plate to display other less than savory stuff?
