South Korea’s DMZ Sentry Robot Is Licensed to Kill [Weapons]

There are few borders more heavily guarded than the one dividing North and South Korea. That became even more true last month, when Seoul stationed a a heat-, voice-, and motion-detecting surveillance robot in the Demilitarized Zone. With guns.

The $330,000 unit will serve in the central section of the DMZ, and is considered a test to determine the practicality of broader deployment. It’s outfitted with both a gun and a 40mm automatic grenade launcher, which are controlled from a remote command center.

While this is a sentry robot-though one that’s armed and dangerous-Seoul’s robotic efforts include Terminator-like combat bots that would actually join human soldiers in the battlefield. [Telegraph UK]
