Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid headed for production

What once perceived to simply be a ridiculously extravagant concept for a plug-in hybrid has now become a ridiculously extravagant reality — Porsche has just announced that it\’s putting the 918 Spyder into production. First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the automobile (in concept form, not less than) packs a 500-horsepower V8 and a couple of 109-horsepower electric motors that are supposed to permit you to get about 78 miles per gallon, or a total of 16 miles of driving straight from the lithium-ion battery back. The pricetag? That hasn\’t been officially announced yet, but estimates peg it around the $650,000 mark. Don\’t worry, though — it\’ll be eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. Head on past the break for the overall (but brief) press release.

Green Light for Series Development of the 918 Spyder

Stuttgart. In its session today, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave the fairway light for series development of the Porsche 918 Spyder. Reflecting the overwhelming response from the public and customers to the thought Study, the Supervisory Board gave Porsche\’s Board of Management the mission to develop a production model based on the auto already presented. This idea version of an ultra-high-performance mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing, hitting the headlines worldwide.

Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG: \” Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the perfect approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the mixture of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We’ll develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. That is also an important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base.\”

The idea Study of the 918 Spyder allows CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km, reminiscent of fuel consumption of 3.0 litre/100 km (94.1 mpg imp) within the NEDC, on the only hand, and the performance of a perfect-sports car, on the opposite. This extremely efficient drivetrain technology then forms a symbiosis inside the 918 Spyder with truly outstanding design and high-tech motorsport achievements. Further product details of the 918 Spyder will likely be disclosed within the months to come back.
