We’ve seen community bike services before, but the Social Bikes setup coming to NYC puts a distinct twist on the belief: the total system is built onto each bike, allowing you to depart it anywhere whenever you’re done with it.
Rather than having you choose up and drop off bikes from central base stations, the Social Bike System offers bikes with big GPS units equipped with a cellular device and a lock. You utilize your phone to track down the nearest free bikes, unlock it using said phone and ride away. While you’re done, you simply lock it back up in different places for somebody else to take.
There will probably be base stations, too, but the power to go away a motorbike anywhere makes this a lot more convenient. It’s a fab system, one I’m excited to aim out relating to my fair city this autumn. [Social Bikes via Gadget Lab]
