Can’t say we’ve heard of the Pleco Chinese Dictionary app earlier than today regardless that it’s been around for two full version releases. Obviously, we’ve seen various Google Goggle-like smartphone apps which can snap pictures and then convert the image to text using optical character recognition (OCR) — something that may be incredibly useful when important stacks of commercial cards. Pleco 2.2, however, is among the first apps we’ve seen which could translate text in real time using the live image presented for your phone’s camera display. The most recent feature, targeted for release in September, requires iOS 4 and will work with either the iPhone 4 or older 3GS. Sure, you would not need this app on daily basis, but it surely might just be the variation between ordering chop suey or a thousand-year old egg garnished with an aspect of stinky tofu. See it in action after the break.
