Alex Shane lives on a sailboat. One night he noticed his faucet running. No big deal for landlubbers. But boaters should pump in every gallon of clean H20 themselves, so wasting water is unacceptable.
This is when Alex, an industrial designer, had a concept: an auto-off, on-demand, easy to trigger spigot called the smart faucet. I now use it in my kitchen.
This thing is so simple, I will’t believe it wasn’t invented before the clapper: It’s just a valve that attaches in your sink spout, with an extended lever to activate flow. Confused? Watch the video:

It’s basically a short draw faucet. ![The Faucet Gets Smart [Home Mod]](http://nexgadget.com/images/The-Faucet-Gets-Smart-Home-Mod_tSmtH_2.jpg)
If you absolutely need to have a relentless stream of water, there’s a latch for that. But that’s not the point. The Smart Faucet is designed to produce flow while you need it, without needing to move in the course of the hassle of turning knobs and disrupting your perfectly set water temperature. Or having to make the effort to turn a typical faucet on and stale. It works. I’m hoping it saves me a ton of water. Alex claims up to 5,000 gallons per year, per person. I’ll be at liberty if I save a 10th of that from not turning off the faucet while brushing my teeth.

I got the chrome model for my kitchen sink. It’s new, and costs $29 on Amazon: more than double the cost of the black plastic one. The entire flow is reduced compared to a wide open spigot. And it took me a couple of days to get used to using it-not to mention having an extended metal rod protruding into my sink, clanking against dishes. But the sink doesn’t run after I’m soaping dishes now. Only after I’m rinsing them. And I figure I’m saving gallons of water that I’d ordinarily send straight down the drain. I’m pretty sure that inside the year, I’ll have a sensible faucet on every sink in my house.
Home Mod (or whatever better name we give you later!) is all in regards to the biggest gadget any of us with ever hack.
