Note-Taking Service Simplenote Adds Tags, Collaboration, and Version History [Note Taking]

Simplenote, the obvious-text, note-taking service that’s at the guts of my holy grail of plain-text capture , released a big update today (to both their website online and iOS app) with new features including tagging, version history, sharing and collaboration, and more.

Let’s break it all down:

Tagging: The most recent tagging feature is pretty self-explanatory. You may now tag any note, and navigate through tags like folders to work out all notes in that tag.

Version history: You may go back in time on any note by clicking the Clock icon and scrolling through a note’s version history-great for purchasing back a lost note, one saved revision at a time.

Sharing: You’ll be able to either simply email or, more useful, collaborate on any note with another individual (Simplenote user or not) by clicking the proportion button inside the iOS app. (I’m not currently seeing the proportion option inside the webapp-while you’re having better luck, let me know.) If you’ve shared a note, a touch RSS-like icon appears next to it to show that it’s been shared. If the person you shared with is a Simplenote user, the shared note will appear in both your accounts. You could unshare a note in the course of the same sharing interface. I’ve only played with note sharing slightly, and while it’s no Google Wave/Etherpad-style live editing, it does update on-the-fly, and it’s a promising feature.

Pin notes: Less exciting, but definitely useful, one could now pin particularly important notes to the pinnacle of the list so you don’t must hassle with searching find it.

Restore deleted notes: In the event you accidentally deleted a significant note, you may head into the recent trash section (via the tags dropdown-or just search tag:Trash) to recover it-or delete it forever.

As I mentioned, the update applies to both Simplenote’s web interface and their iOS application. Simplenote’s been inside the technique of updating the API, though, and third-party Simplenote applications will likely start adding a number of the new features in coming weeks.

Simplenote is a free service that works in any web browser and syncs with almost any device .
