So, that Galaxy Tab teaser video from yesterday was pretty great! But if bits of it caused a bit of deja vu, it is usually because the interface seems to take various cues from the iPad.
The Gadgets has a whole breakdown of perceived similarities, some of which might be fairer than others. Exhibit A above, for example, doesn’t strike me as particularly noteworthy. Both have app icons. Big whoop.
When you get into a little bit more detail, though, the commonalities are more striking. Listed here are their native email apps side by side:
And their keyboards:
Etc.
But even supposing here is imitation, who says that’s a nasty thing? If anything, Swype on a tablet can be an important improvement over the iPad’s keyboard. And the iPad does email well! Why introduce an inferior solution to simply say you were different?
Besides, even supposing the Galaxy Tab and iPad interfaces really are that similar, there’s plenty enough to differentiate the two. Front and rear-facing cameras, for one, this means that video chat. It’s doubtful the displays often is the same, especially since Samsung’s committed to Super AMOLED for all of their other Galaxy S products (though it’s not certain whether it’ll happen here). And all of the inherent differences that come from being iOS versus Android.
So yes, it is usually a well-known UI-but in the entire right ways. [ The Gadgets ]
