Another streaming video service, but this one I may be drawn to : Unlimited video streaming from Amazon , a la Netflix Watch Instantly. Amazon’s chatting with NBC Universal, Time Warner and Viacom about subscription deals, possibly bundled with Amazon Prime.
The idea could be a whole lot like Netflix’s streaming service, being able to watch video on the net, or, inside the WSJ’s words, ” through devices that play TV shows and films Amazon already sells on a personal basis, in keeping with a few of the people briefed on the proposal. Those devices include some Internet-connected TVs and the Xbox 360 videogame console from Microsoft Corp.”
One way Amazon is talking it up is as a bundle with its Prime service-already awesome if you are going to buy many of stuff from Amazon, with free two-day shipping on nearly anything for $79 a year.
Ideally, Amazon supposedly wants to launch the service by the tip of the year, however it is dependent upon what number media companies check in to let Amazon stream their video library. That’s always the trick with this type of thing-just ask Netflix .
That said, it kind of feels like Amazon has to a minimum of try, if Kindle is the least of its digital content ambitions. Meanwhile Netflix is eating up the subscription video market as Amazon Video on Demand seems fairly stagnant. (I mean, when was the last time you heard anything about it?) Is it going to lure me far from Netflix? Not really, but I wouldn’t mind it as a perk for Amazon Prime. [ WSJ ]
