When Class Bores Texting Soars, Professors Roar [Texting]

When Class Bores Texting Soars, Professors Roar [Texting] Move over doodling, there’s a new time-waster in town. Texting. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? Once you’re a school student you’ve definitely heard of it, as 90% of all students have copped to doing it during class. Professors are mad!

Shockingly, some students have even used it to cheat on exams! Shocking!

Proving history repeats in spite of what the school room time-waster happens to be, the students think texting is their right and professors think the practice often is the doom of high learning institutions internationally.

Student Tom Markey of Wilkes University, speaking to the AP :

” If it’s a very boring class, texting is a pleasing alternative to having to take a seat there and focus,” said Markley, a senior computer science major at Wilkes. But, he conceded, ” there are definitely times when it takes far from your concentration. Suddenly you’ll be at the top of the period and say, ‘What did we do today?’”

Rebuttal!

Laurence Thomas, a preferred philosophy professor whose courses have waiting lists, walked out on his class of nearly 400 students last week when he caught a number of students fidgeting with their phones rather than being attentive to him. It wasn’t the first time Thomas has cut a class short because a student broke his no-texting rule. To Thomas, texting saps the class of its intellectual energy.

” My job is to interact the class, to provide them stuff to consider,” he said. ” They must respect that.”

The more things change, the more they-oh you know the quote, just as you know there will always be distractions for students. The ones that truly like to be there and need to profit will learn, and the ones in an effort to text incessantly in school and skate by will accomplish that. The remaining will fail and have loads of time to hash out that epic text that just couldn’t wait until the tip of a 45-minute lecture. [ MSNBC ]

Just what's a "mobile PC" at the present time? Based on market research firm NPD, that category now includes both tablets and laptops -- and by that definition, Apple is unsurprisingly way earlier than its competitors. According to its preliminary numbers, Apple shipped 23.4 million mobile PCs within the fourth quarter of 2011 (nearly 80 percent of which have been iPads), which was enough… »
