Robert Grossman is an illustrator, painter, sculptor, Academy Award nominated filmmaker, cartoonist, author-and yes, the creator of the long-lasting AIRPLANE! poster. We’re honored to have this legendary illustrator as our Gizmodo Guest Artist this month.
Before creating countless illustrations for lots major national publications, children’s books, and album covers, Grossman spent his days studying art under the guidance of his father, display artist Joseph Grossman. He then attended Saturday morning art classes at the Museum of contemporary Art in Manhattan City and later went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts at Yale University. Once his education and a stint as the editor of The Yale Record were completed, Grossman’s impressive fifty year career truly began.
Even in case you didn’t recognize Robert Grossman by name, you’ve probably seen one of his many illustrations.
If you’ve read TIME, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Esquire, TV Guide, Sports Illustrated, The Times, The Nation, The recent York Observer, The Atlantic Monthly, The recent Republic, Evergreen Review, Manhattan magazine, National Lampoon, and The recent York Times beforehand years, odds are that you just’ve looked at a cover created, a feature splash or a cartoon by Grossman.
Seen Rolling Stone’s poster series with images of George W. Bush, Richard Nixon, Bob Dylan, The Who, Jerry Garcia, and Crosby Stills and Nash? Grossman created them.
Giggled over comics in Ny magazine, The Nation, The most recent Yorker, or The recent York Observer? You then can have seen something written and drawn by Grossman.
