Future Navy lasers will ‘burn incoming missiles,’ blast through ominous vessels

The usa Navy has been engaged on next-gen weaponry ever for the reason that last-gen was present-gen, and if the next next-gen ever actually arrives, well… we don’t stand an opportunity at lasting very long. In keeping with Wired, the Navy’s Office of Naval Research is expecting laser technology (because it pertains to weaponry) to mature within the next score, and if all goes well, a free-electron laser will be mounted on a boat in the course of the 2020s. As of now, FELs produce a 14-kilowatt beam, but that figure must hit 100+ with a purpose to seriously defend a boat; unfortunately in the event you adore peace, it kind of feels we’re well on our thanks to having just that. When it’s complete, these outrageous pieces of artillery would be in a position to “burning incoming missiles out of the sky [and] zapping through an enemy vessel’s hull.” Something tells us that whole “You Sunk My Battleship” meme is barely years from reappearing in grand fashion.
