Apps collecting users’ information without their knowledge might not be anything new , however’s not everyday we see things rise to the extent of Federal Grand Jury investigation. That happened today, however, with Federal prosecutors in New Jersey launching a probe to find out whether smartphone apps were collecting personal information like a person’s location without being suitably up front about it. Thus far only Pandora and one independent developer have come forward and said they’ve received subpoenas, but Pandora says it believes the probe is an industry-wide one, and that it’s “not a particular target of the investigation.” Because the Wall Street Journal notes, the investigation can be still only within the early stages and will well not bring about any actual charges, but it surely looks extending beyond just the app makers themselves. A “person conversant in the problem” has told the Wall Street Journal that both Apple and Google were asked to produce information at the apps and app makers in question, although nor is commenting at the matter publicly as we speak.
