DirecTV is field testing RVU, will offer satellite TV without individual receivers in October

We’ve been waiting since 2009 for the RVU Alliance to deliver on its promise of TV service controlled by a prime server that streams content to any screen in the house without requiring any set-top boxes and it seems that DirecTV is able to make it so. a statement issued today indicates it has started field trials of the HR34 RVU server in an effort to be the keystone in its Home Media Center, and plans to roll the service out nationwide in October. For you to know when to begin buying HDTVs just like the Samsung D6000 series , it also mentions RVU certification for those and DirecTV’s own C30 Home Media Clients (check up on a video demo here ) is anticipated to be finalized in June. There’s been some delays but when you were also hoping that 2011 would be the year we are able to do away with the cable box , the progress is asking very promising.

[Thanks, Tyler]

DIRECTV Launches Field Trial of Its Home Media Center with Industry’s First RVU-Enabled DIRECTV Server

New HR34 Server is the Hub of DIRECTV Home Media Center, that allows you to Provide Customers with a ‘Receiver-less’ Television Solution for the Home

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– DIRECTV, the world’s largest pay TV service, has recently started field trial testing for its highly anticipated DIRECTV® Home Media Center in order to ultimately provide customers with a “receiver-less” solution for a lot of TVs of their homes. The launch of field trial testing for DIRECTV’s model HR34 RVU-enabled server, the center of the DIRECTV Home Media Center, marks a serious milestone both for the RVU technology and the hot DIRECTV platform, which the corporate plans to start rolling out nationwide to customers in October 2011.

RVU is a consumer/server-based technology that permits the tv viewer to experience a consistent, pixel accurate server-generated user interface on various consumer electronics devices. The RVU specification uses widely implemented UPnP and DLNA technologies to enable a gateway device which include a sophisticated set-top box to work with non-proprietary client devices which includes connected TVs, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes.

“The DIRECTV Home Media Center goes to simplify the best way our customers watch television throughout their homes and provides them access not just to their favorite content in HD and DVR functionality on each television, but to a consistent, feature rich user interface, it doesn’t matter what room they may be in,” said Romulo Pontual, executive vp and CTO for DIRECTV. “We made a commitment to RVU technology once we joined the RVU Alliance in 2009, and we’re excited to work out the fruits of the Alliance’s labor becoming a reality with the launch of our DIRECTV Home Media Center field trial.”

The HR34 would be compatible with RVU certified clients, including DIRECTV’s C30 Home Media Clients and RVU compatible televisions. RVU certification for these products is predicted to be finalized this June.

DIRECTV is currently a member of The RVU Alliance, founded by Broadcom, Cisco, DIRECTV, Samsung and Verizon, which facilitates the adoption of an open standard technology that enables service providers to expand their unique UI and user experience onto standard consumer devices without the will for proprietary equipment.
