Smartphones were going to space for some time now — well, technically near space generally — but in decidedly DIY ways, including a “shuttle” produced from Styrofoam beer coolers . However the actual Space Shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to finish its final voyage with a couple of space-ready iPhone 4′s aboard. After docking with the International Space Station, astronauts use the phones, to not become Foursquare’s Mayor of Space, it sort of feels, but to run an app called SpaceLab for iOS. Designed by Houston’s Odyssey Space Research, the app includes a variety of navigation tools which will test the iPhone cameras and gyroscopes, alongside a self-monitoring experiment in an effort to reveal the results of radiation at the devices. The distance Shuttle launch is tentatively scheduled for July 8, but meanwhile even earth-bound astro-nots (aww) can pick up the app for $1 by following the source link.
