Starting q4, for the primary eight days once they air, watching Fox TV shows online would require a subscription to Hulu Plus or a participating cable or satellite company. Thus far Dish Network is the 1st and only provider to enroll its customers for access to the brand new walled garden on Fox’s site but others trying to fill out their TV Everywhere lineups probably won’t be far behind. While pay-TV networks like ESPN with ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app and EPIX have already gone the “authentication” route, Fox is the primary of the published networks to take action. The brand new rules go into effect August 15th, then we’ll discover if Fox is driving cable cutters towards buying TV, piracy, or simply ignoring the newest episode of Glee altogether.
New Initiative to Take Effect August 15, 2011
Participating Video Distributors to Have Exclusive 8-Day Window
DISH Network Subscribers First to learn from Authentication Service
LA – Fox Networks and Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX) today announced that beginning August 15, video distributors that take part in the company’s online authentication service can have an exclusive 8-day window for brand spanking new episodes of FOX programs. To monitor new episodes of FOX shows tomorrow, viewers can visit Fox.com, Hulu.com, Dishonline.com or the net TV portals of any future participating distributors and log in with their subscriber usernames and passwords. Viewers who don’t enroll in a participating distributor would be ready to watch new episodes online eight days following their initial air dates.
DISH Network often is the first to present this service, allowing their verified subscribers to exploit the exclusive window and look at new episodes of FOX shows the day once they air on broadcast television.
“We’re continually observing opportunities to offer our pay television distributors with content and products that enhance the worth of pay television to subscribers,” said Michael Hopkins, President, Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Fox Networks. “Our new authentication service will continue to offer next-day access to FOX broadcast shows for our viewers who join participating pay television providers.”
“DISH Network is proud to be the primary pay-TV provider in America to offer customers the chance to take full benefit of the recent FOX.com viewing experience-at no additional cost,” said Dave Shull, Senior Vice chairman of Programming for DISH Network. “Early access to FOX.com is an excellent addition to our expansive TV Everywhere platform, which supplies DISH Network customers the facility to observe whatever they need anytime, anywhere.”
FOX authentication only impacts online viewing. All other television viewing options remain unchanged. For additional info about this service, or to make inquiries about future service, viewers should visit www.fox.com/watchnewepisodes.
