Sanjay Jha hints at Motorola’s plans to gather patent royalties from Android competitors

In the event you haven’t noticed, the mobile patent wars were heating up lately, and Motorola hasn’t exactly been sitting quietly at the sidelines. Ago year, the company’s been within the courtroom with a lot of major players, including Apple and Microsoft , and now the outfit seems poised to head after other Android handset makers. In line with Unwired View, during a keynote speech on the Oppenheimer Technology and Communications conference, CEO Sanjay Jha signaled that Motorola could soon go at the offensive in terms of the contest:

i’d elevate IP as an important for differentiation (among Android vendors). We’ve an incredibly large IP portfolio, and that i think within the long-term, as things cool down, you’ll discover a meaningful difference in positions of numerous Android players. Both, in the case of avoidance of royalties, in addition to potentially having the ability to collect royalties. And that may make an incredible difference to those who have very strong IP positions.

If Motorola does indeed intend to distinguish itself from its competitors by clutching tightly to its patent portfolio, could we soon see a replay of Microsoft’s recent royalty collection binge ? We’ll just need to be patient.
