The LG Optimus 3D certainly is not the slimmest smartphone we’ve ever seen, however seems like the chunky handset is ready to get seriously streamlined. In an interview with Pocket-Lint, LG developer Dr. Henry Noh confirmed that his company is operating on a thinner version of its 4.3-inch phone, hinting that it could be ready for release by next year. Noh didn’t offer specifics on dimensions, but acknowledged that the present version, at 11.9mm (0.47 inches) thick, definitely is not the “sexiest phone at streetlevel” — something he hopes to vary. “Eventually, we wish to make it in order that having the 3D won’t necessarily mean that it will be thicker,” Noh explained. “That’s going to be a differentiating factor that comes without charge to the user.” Doing so, he claims, could help LG’s glasses-free 3D device distinguish itself from its 2D competitors:
“In this day and age, all of the phones look the identical. They have got a tremendous screen – 4.3-inches is normal nowadays – and next year they’re moving even larger. And so they have a hard and fast variety of touch buttons. They’re the identical thickness. They have got an analogous camera. Or even an analogous OS. It is so boring.”
Obviously, it continues to be seen even if this strategy actually pans out, but it’s definitely something we’ll be maintaining a tally of.
