Back in April of 2010, RIM snatched up slightly known property called QNX, which primarily powered in-car infotainment systems. As we know, that little OS eventually became the platform on which the PlayBook was built — but QNX hasn’t left the dashboard behind completely. Seems the software inside OnStar’s FMV , which went on sale in July, is de facto QNX’s Neutrino RTOS. Why are we only studying about it now? Who knows, but maybe there’s some sweet BlackBerry and OnStar integration coming once RIM puts QNX in phones. Have a look at the PR after the break.
FMV leverages QNX Neutrino Realtime Operating System and QNX Aviage
Acoustic Processing Suite to optimize system performance and hands-free calling.
OTTAWA, September 20, 2011 – QNX Software Systems Limited, a world supplier of software, tools, and engineering services for the in-car telematics and infotainment market, today announced that its operating system platform powers OnStar® FMV, an oem rearview mirror that includes core OnStar services akin to Automatic Crash Response, Turn-by-Turn Navigation, and Hands-free Calling.
OnStar FMV leverages two key components of QNX Software Systems’ platform – the automotive-grade QNX® Neutrino® Realtime Operating System (RTOS), which have been road-proven in millions of vehicles worldwide, and the QNX® Aviage® Acoustic Processing Suite, which boosts OnStar FMV’s ability to supply clear, accurate hands-free calling, even in a loud automotive interior.
The QNX Neutrino RTOS is utilized by the world’s best-known automotive brands to bring high levels of performance, reliability, and upgradeability to hands-free systems, digital instrument clusters, multimedia head units, connectivity modules, 3D navigation systems, and other in-car infotainment products. The QNX Aviage Acoustic Processing Suite is a good, modular solution that provides sophisticated echo cancellation and noise reduction for hands-free and speech-recognition systems. Unlike traditional hands-free solutions, the suite eliminates the will for a lengthy tuning process and dedicated hardware, lowering production costs and lengthening design flexibility.
“QNX Software Systems’ technology helps to drive improvements to vehicle safety, and OnStar FMV is a good example of ways our software allows a driver’s voice to be heard in a loud cockpit environment,” said Derek Kuhn, Vp of world Marketing and Business Development, QNX Software Systems. “We’re extremely proud to work with OnStar and GM to make the driving experience simpler, safer, and safer.”
