Geekend steps its game up with a 24-hour Hackathon, promises boost to nerd cred

For the past two years, all kinds of gadget, social media and design geeks have descended upon Savannah, GA. The goal is obvious: to spend the weekend hearing from the nerds they appear as much as, including our pal Major Nelson , who responded in 2009. This year was no different — and to make things much more interesting — event organizers invited attendees to take part within the first ever Geekend Hackathon. Teams of as much as four members, fueled by a copious supply of Mountain Dew and pizza, got 24 hours to come back up with the main innovative desktop, mobile or web application they can. There has been only one catch: teams needed to incorporate no less than three out of 5 key phrases that were randomly assigned to them. The sole other stipulation was that if the code used to create each app wasn’t already available online, they’d to position the open source that they developed in an online repository before the development.

We were there to catch the implications, which showcased a mixed bag of entertaining (and useful) applications. Projects starting from an app tracking vegetable eating habits to 1 that uses image recognition to bring your favorite comics to a mobile device showed just what may well be done in an afternoon — given enough caffeine, without a doubt . Another allowed you to feed your urge to hug every cat, while a local advocacy community enabled concerned citizens to vote on issues of their area. Rounding out the sector was a field trip database for teachers to share ideas on sites to take their students for the suitable experience. Two winners — judge’s choice and people’s choice — received a great geeky trophy (pictured above) and a chief boost to their street…er online cred.
