Munich, November 11, 2011 – Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) presents the world’s smallest SIM card: the nano-SIM. a 3rd smaller than the micro-SIM, the nano-SIM enables manufacturers to supply devices which are even thinner and perform even better. This new development from G&D can be finding its way into the primary mobile devices as early as next year.
Some two decades on from producing the primary ever SIM cards, G&D is leading the present trend towards smaller cards. On the CARTES & IDentification 2011 trade exhibition in Paris, the Munich-based technology group is displaying the world’s smallest SIM card up to now.
Measuring approximately 12mm x 9mm, the nano-SIM is set 30 percent smaller than the micro-SIM. The thickness of the cards was reduced by about 15 percent – an enormous technical challenge. In comparison to the SIM cards most generally used today, the nano-SIM is nearly 60 percent smaller. It offers device manufacturers the crucial good thing about freeing up more space for other cellphone components, together with additional memory or larger batteries. And since nano-SIM cards are significantly smaller and thinner, they can also provide help to create thinner devices.
Initial samples were made available by G&D to varied mobile network operators for testing. The standardization of the nano-SIM is anticipated to be implemented in the course of the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) by the top of the year.
Backward compatibility with older device models is ensured by an adapter solution that permits the nano-SIM to be integrated into all established mobile devices for universal use.
“The discovery of the SIM card remains a milestone within the history of G&D. With the nano-SIM, we have got shown how this development can move toward perfection,” claims Axel Deininger, Head of G&D’s Secure Devices division.
G&D might be showcasing the nano-SIM on the CARTES & IDentification 2011 trade extravaganza from November 15 to 17 at stand 4 J 001.
