Intel is combining its netbook and tablets, ultra-mobility, mobile communications and mobile wireless divisions right into a “Mobile and Communications” super-unit. It’s aiming to get closer the portable chip big boys like Qualcomm and NVIDIA . Santa Clara’s chips may power 80 percent of the world’s desktops and laptops, but within the mobile space the energy efficient ARM (and its multiple licensees) is king. The recent unit can be headed by Mike Bell and Hermann Eul and could be in control of speeding up the event of future blockbuster mobile chips, in addition to ensuring a great launch for the 32nm Medfield when it arrives early next year — it has got some massive dainty smartphone shoes to fill.
