Panasonic preps TVs with 5,000,000:1 contrast ratios

Panasonic in Japan introduced two new ranges of plasma HDTVs, with its VIERA G2 and S2 series. The G2s are said to have image quality that is nearly a third better than the outgoing G1 range, and offer a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 thanks to Panasonic’s new PDP Black panel….

Taiwan’s ASUS is getting into the highly-competitive e-book reader market, although late, with its DR-570. While the 6-inch device was conspicuous by its absence at the recent CES show, it will be technologically advanced, sporting a bright, OLED color screen and is said to have a 122-hour battery life. It should also be much more powerful than most e-readers as it will support Flash video over its built-in Wi-Fi or 3G connection….

NVIDIA edged closed to the formal release of boards based on its Fermi architecture with fuller details about the processor as well as an early test. The 512-core design is now known to also be a high-end graphics design and adds 16 geometry and 4 raster units that weren’t present in previous GeForce 200 cards. These newly dedicated units let a Fermi chip better handle tasks out of order….

HP has quietly updated its existing Pavilion dv6t and dv7t notebooks and now offer the option of Intel’s recently released Core i5 processors. The former is a 15-inch system that can otherwise be optioned up with up to 640GB of hard drive space, as much as 8GB of RAM, a 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 320M or 512MB GeForce G 105M, a Blu-ray drive and Bluetooth, among others….

Nokia this morning sent invitations to a London press event for “big news” about its Ovi services. The company doesn’t provide any details of the Thursday event but expects its Executive VP Anssi Vanjoki to show along with UK General Manager Mark Loughran. It expects the news to be short with just a 15 minute presentation and a Q&A session afterwards….

Mophie today promised to give Japanese iPhone owners much-requested support for FeliCa wireless payments. The team-up with two local firms will see a version of Mophie’s casing that uses the same RFID wireless as the Sony standard. In tandem with an iPhone app, the add-on will let Apple’s device pay for many goods by bringing the iPhone within an inch of a FeliCa source, such as at a store. Mophie promises that it will work in reverse and that shops can use the accessory to take payments, especially at on-the-street shops where a usual counter isn’t an option….

A rumor floated by Taiwan’s Commercial Times newspaper today claims Apple is developing its first touchscreen iMac. The new version would allegedly be a 22-inch model and would be separate from the 21.5-inch and 27-inch versions already on sale. Quanta would be responsible for the manufacturing, while Sintek Photronic would make the touch overlays for the screens….
