Your smartphone: future air-quality data point
You know the good feeling you get when you think about how your computer is running Folding@home all the time, or that you’ve been careful to clip six-pack rings all your life? Well, soon you might have one more warm fuzzy feeling, if this project underway at Intel Labs Berkeley comes through. They’re designing portable air-quality sensors that monitor and sample the air around you throughout the day and allow it to be shared and analyzed later.
New Elgato EyeTV hybrid is smaller, more compatible
Elgato just released the updated version of their USB tuner, the EyeTV. This new version has been resized (smaller) and added compatibility with Windows 7, making it ideal for that HTPC project you’ve been thinking about.
Carpuccino runs on coffee

For many of us, it is a nice, hot cup of coffee that keeps us going through the day, which strangely enough is the same case for the Carpuccino that you see above. What used to be a standard 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco is now a coffee-powered car, but mileage isn’t that ideal (and a waste of good coffee, we might add) since it requires 56 espressos for a single mile. It will run on any brand as long as the coffee is very dry and comes in a pellet form factor that enables the air to move through the pile of coffee as it burns.

HP shows off Flash on their slate
HP has uploaded a brand new video of its Windows 7 slate device that features Adobe’s Flash running in full glory, taking a direct jab at the iPad simultaneously. This clip parades the tablet’s ability to run Flash for sites such as Hulu as well as AIR for out-of-browser apps like Pandora radio. According to the presenters in the video, the right hardware will boost Flash’s capability on the slate device, and a sole battery charge ought to have it run for hours and hours on end, even where HD video is concerned.

Notice the Windows alternative in HP’s slate device. This is a good thing.
We have written repeatedly that Windows itself is one of the main reasons why touchscreen computers have never caught the general public’s attention. The interface just wasn’t designed for finger input. Like it or not, that’s the truth. Windows was designed to be used with a mouse, and to a lesser extent, a pen or stylus.
That’s fine. Windows 7 works great. I’m writing this on a Win7 machine. But I hate Windows on my tablet computers for the aforementioned reason. It’s also the reason I’m very apprehensive of the upcoming onslaught of slate computers. I’m afraid that wonderful hardware will be passed up in favor of the disappointing iPad because of the interface. But Adobe gave me hope today in its demo of Flash and Air on the HP slate device.
HP Slate makes an appearance to show off Flash, stays for a rock concert
digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/HP_Slate_makes_an_appearance_to_show_off_Flash’; It shouldn’t be any surprise that the HP Slate supports Flash, since it runs Windows 7, but we’ve seen so little of the device since Steve Ballmer first waved it around at CES that we’re still totally intrigued by this video from Adobe showing it in action. Yep, there it is, playing video, running casual Flash games, and using AIR applications. We also get a quick shot of the on-screen keyboard, which looks like a mildly tweaked version of the standard Windows 7 keyboard. We can’t say until we use it, but it certainly doesn’t look like it’ll be fun to type on. Interestingly, Flash is said to be hardware-accelerated on the Slate, which suggests something other than a bone-stock Atom setup in there — we’d guess it’s an Atom plus a Broadcom Crystal HD Accelerator, but there’s a chance it’s something else entirely. HP’s also posted up a new marketing video, which bears a striking resemblance to last night’s iPad commercial — until the end, which frankly makes no sense. Check ‘em both after the break.
[Thanks, Rick]

Asus OPlay Air HD2 Unveiled At CeBIT 2010

If you’ve been eagerly awaiting Apple’s iPad, you might be a little disappointed with all the rumors going around that Apple will not be able to meet the demand, and supply is short etc. That being said, Asus has come up with an updated version of the O! Play HD2, which will feature a built-in HDMI port, USB port, eSata port, not to mention 3 slots for memory cards. Specifications are scarce at the moment, considering that is able to play networked media, as well as Full HD 1080p video playback, it’ll certainly be popular amongst TV junkies. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you posted when more information on this surfaces.

Foldaway Massage Chair

Times are still hard even though the cloud of recession seems to be moving on, which means you still need to put in all the extra hours in order to render yourself relevant to the company. Well, all that stress could turn you into a nervous wreck, which is why the Foldaway Massage Chair offers an invigorating leg and foot massage without taking up too much space at the office. This massage is made possible thanks to finger-like nodes which provide a deep-penetrating acupressure massage on the toes, arches and soles of the feet. Air cells in the seat will expand and contract to soothe pressure points in the lower back and buttocks, all the while offering gentle stretching of the hips and waist. There is a quartet of 15 minute massage programs for the chair to choose from, but you will need to fork out $800 for this first.

Apple patents for unibody MacBook designs granted

It has been a couple of years since Apple rolled out their first unibody computer in the form of the MacBook Air, and these 700 plus days has resulted in the company finally receiving ownership of its unique design and manufacturing process. The patents do cover the computer’s glass multi-touch trackpad and clamshell design as well which tapers a mere 0.16″ at its thinnest point for an impressive form factor. Guess unibody designs from Apple look set to be a staple from now on.

Click And Grow Allows You To Grow Plants Via Computer

Ever wanted to take a crack at growing some plants for your home, but couldn’t find the time to do it? With the Click & Grow system, it seems that you’ll be hard pressed to find an excuse for not churning out the pretty plants that the missus has been asking for. Instead of having to tend to the plant everyday like a baby, you can pretty much allow its computerized system to do all the dirty work. It doesn’t require soil, as it relies on aeroponics, a growing system that grows the plants in an air or mist environment. To make things easier, all you need to do is pop in a plant cartridge that contains the seeds of the desired plant, which should also contain some basic fertilizer and information about the seed type, add water into the water tank, and you’re good to go. The basic model sports notification lights to indicate when the tank needs refilling, but the higher-end model can even collect water from the air, further lightening your burden. The entry-level Click & Grow pots start from 17 Euros ($23), while the seed cartridges will cost between 2.5-4 Euros ($3-5). The company is planning to launch the product in select markets in a few months, and when that happens, do you think you’ll be getting one? Incidentally, the company behind this is called Click and Grow LLC, ensuring you won’t be able to mistake which company came up with this product.

Viliv S5 MID gets accuracy-boosting HID driver for Windows 7
Viliv’s S5 MID, the little machine that packs the Vaio P’s Z520 processor in a legitimately pocketable form-factor, just got a breath of fresh air. It’s an HID (human interface device) driver for Windows 7, boosting the machine’s touchscreen abilities and enabling the breadth of Windows 7’s tablet functionality. According to Uber Tablet this greatly enhances usability by, amongst other things, presenting the Windows tablet keyboard rather than relying on the accessibility version and enabling better calibration. The driver being used here is legitimate according to reports we’ve read, but it is not signed and doesn’t appear to be an official release from Viliv, so you may want to exercise a bit of caution before you install — but don’t wait too long. This sounds like a pretty tasty update.
