Not 3D but pretty, too: Sony’s seven new LCD TVs

By Serkan Toto

Granted, the seven new LCD (non-3D) TVs Sony announced [JP] in Japan today are not as sexy as their 3D counterparts, but they are worth mentioning, too. The new BRAVIAs break down into three series, the NX800, the HX700 and the HDD-equipped BX-30H. In contrast to the 3D TVs presented today, Sony didn’t go into details regarding international sales plans for their 2D models.

Sony 3D TVs go on sale in Japan (and probably the US) in June (video)

By Serkan Toto

Just yesterday, we reported about Panasonic’s sales plans for their 3D devices in the US (Samsung is ready, too). And today, Sony has announced [JP] prices and release dates for eight 3D BRAVIA TVs for the Japanese market. The company wants to sell a total of 25 million LCD TVs next fiscal year (a whopping 67% increase from its forecast for the current fiscal year that ends this month), with 3D TVs accounting for 10% of that number.

Sony Active Shutter 3D TV glasses priced

Sony Active Shutter 3D TV glasses priced

Sony has slapped price tags on its active shutter 3D glasses as well as emitter, where both of them will go down very well with a 3D-capable 2010 BRAVIA TV just like fine wine and a lovely French dinner. From June onwards, the TDG-BR100 as well as the TDG-BR50 active shutter 3D glasses will retail for around $133 after conversion, where the glasses’ width are easily adjustable to cater for those who have larger than usual faces as well as folks who wear specs. As for the 3D infrared emitter, it retails for $55 a pop. Folks who pick up the BRAVIA LX900 series can skip this since the TV already comes with the emitter integrated within.

Sony Plans To End OLED TV Sales In Japan

Sony Plans To End OLED TV Sales In Japan

You might still be drooling over Sony’s 11-inch OLED digital TV (Bravia XEL-1), but it seems that the folks over in Japan are already over it. Sony has confirmed that it stopped production of OLED TVs in Japan, and sales of OLED TVs will end when the existing inventory runs out. Fortunately for us, Sony plans to continue production for North America, Europe and other overseas markets. The fact that the only model available, the 11-inch XEL-1, is priced at 200,000 yen ($2,200) in Japan, was always going to give it a hard time competing against the larger, cheaper LCD and plasma sets. While there wasn’t any official sales figure of the OLED TV sets mentioned by Sony, we do know that it had a monthly production capacity of 2000 units. If you’re living overseas, are you planning to grab one of these TVs, or do you think the folks over in Japan got it right?

The Sony BDP-S470 is ready for all your Blu-ray 3D needs

By Matt Burns

Ready or not, 3D Blu-ray movies are coming and the new Sony BDP-S470 is ready to handle all of them — once Sony outs the necessary firmware. The same goes for the previously-announced BDP-S570 player and BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 HTIB systems. All these systems will be rocking 3D movies soon. The new S470, however, is just curiously $20 more than the S370 and a few dollars less than the flagship S570 besides the fact that all three models are nearly identical.

Sony’s $200 BDP-S470 is company’s first 3D-ready Blu-ray player

By Darren Murph

And the flood gates are now officially open. Just hours after Panasonic introduced its newest 3D Blu-ray recorders and players, along comes Sony to brag about its first 3D-ready standalone deck. The BDP-S470, which is slated to ship later this month for $200, arrives with the ability to handle BD, DVD, CD and even SACD, with a 3D Blu-ray upgrade (via firmware update) planned for this summer. You’ll also find BD-Live support, BRAVIA Internet Video, a USB socket for playing back media stored elsewhere, 1080p DVD upscaling and TrueHD / DTS-HD Master Audio decoding. If you were planning to snag a BDP-S570 BD player or one of the BDV-E770W / BDV-E570 Blu-ray Disc home theater systems, you’ll be elated to know that those systems will also get a gratis 3D update in just a few months, with exact pricing and release details tucked down there in the source. Time to pick up a pair of 3D Gunnar Optiks, don’tcha think?

Sony PS3 3D firmware update coming this summer

By Ubergizmo
Sony PS3 3D firmware coming this summer

According to John Koller, director of hardware marketing for SCEA, the PS3 console looks set to ride the 3D wave this year by incorporating 3D-supporting firmware update so that Sony’s family of living room entertainment products will play nice with each other, especially the recently announced 3D-capable Bravia TVs at CES 2010. It would be interesting to see whether gamers will adopt 3D gaming as fast as Sony would like them to, after all, doing so would mean selling even more TVs, right?

Sony launches EX300, EX500, and EX700 Bravia TVs in Japan

By Tim Stevens
Sony launches EX300, EX500, and EX700 Bravia TVs in Japan

Your HDTV comparison list just got a little longer, with Sony announcing a big long line of new Bravia LCDs of all shapes and sizes. Lowest end is the EX300, with 22-, 26-, and 32-inch models that all sport 1,366 x 768 resolutions, a suite of silly colors (white, pink, brown, and black), and prices ranging from ¥70,000 – ¥90,000 ($770 – $990). The EX500 is a ¥130,000 ($1,400) 40-inch, 120Hz, 1080p model, while the EX700 models range from 32- to 52-inches and will set you back between ¥120,000 ($1,300) and ¥300,000 ($3,300). The extra money nets you LED backlighting, luscious thinness (22mm), and networkability, which means YouTube and DLNA streamability, plus widgets and all sorts of other goodies. All are scheduled to hit Japan on February 25, and all will surely make their way across the pond eventually — except maybe that pink one.

EX series: Sony to roll out 8 new BRAVIA TVs (video)

By Serkan Toto

A total of eight new LCD TVs have been announced [JP] by Sony in Tokyo today, and all of them are part of the new BRAVIA EX series. Sony has unveiled four EX700 (flagship) models with LED backlight, one TV named EX500 and three rather basic devices branded as EX300.

Sony’s COO says no new OLED TVs in 2010, BRAVIA Internet Video Link is coming to PS3

By Paul Miller

Want to blast some BRAVIA Internet Video Link content from your PS3 to your million-inch Sony-built 3D OLED TV this year? Well, you’re half in luck. Sony’s bringing the Internet Video Link service to the PS3 (which seems to us to provide little that isn’t already possible on the PS3, but who are we to judge?) but won’t do any new OLED TVs this year. The problem is, naturally, cost, but hopefully 2011 will bring better things in sizes larger than 11-inches — LG won’t have a 30-incher until 2012 at least, and that seems too long to wait. Sony COO Stan Glasgow, in his interview with Sony Insider that turned up these nuggets, also is refreshingly non-bombastic about 3D. He points out that Sony’s doing 3D-capable TVs for essentially zero price differentiation, with separate glasses and emitters that can be bought after the fact, and calls the 3D channel rollout “complex.” But who knows, perhaps he’s just never seen enough of Taylor Swift in 3D to know what he’s missing?
