Qualcomm’s multi-fold mobile device is the future we keep waiting for
Qualcomm isn’t typically in the business of producing consumer-facing hardware — the company prefers to just build the chips that make your devices go “vroom” — but we’ve come across a patent application that details just such an idea. The multi-fold mobile device can be seen as either a foldable tablet or an expandable cellphone, but in either case its purpose is clearly to act as a hybrid device that performs both roles. With all least two displays on its three panels, this concept will also automatically reconfigure its UI based on a folding configuration sensor, and Qualcomm suggests you might also use it as a widescreen TV display, an alarm clock, a media player, or a web browser. Click past the break for a couple more suggested use diagrams, and feel free to write to Qualcomm with demands that this be put into production pronto.

Zero watch concept perfects the minimal timepiece
Unless you’re a fan of high-tech jewelry, few things are as irksome as an overblown wristwatch design (we’re looking at you Tokyoflash). While a binary timepiece will certainly up your geek cred, it’s not very useful for providing at-a-glance information. Robert Dabi’s Zero concept above, however, remains simple, beautiful, and amazingly enough, useful, all that same time. Practical too if he can coax a batch of round LCD displays into a production run. More pics and video after the break.

Analogue Tape Glove Sounds Interesting

Can’t think of an interesting project to kill your weekend with? Well, the guys from SignalToNoise came up with a rather interesting project, the Analogue Tape Glove. Basically it’s a mash of a couple of old tape decks, an amplifier, some glue, and a nearby wall. When it’s all set in place, you’ll be able to play the music that’s on the old magnetic tapes by dragging the fingertips of the modified glove across the surface of the tape. Of course, the sounds will vary and it’ll probably sound just strange, but then again, it’s a strange concept to begin with. At least you’ll have something to do with those old cassette tapes lying around in your attic, right? Video of the setup in action after the jump.

Celsius X VI II Remontage Papillon Phone

In a world increasingly dominated by electronic devices, it’s occasionally refreshing to see a mechanical device show up again, and this time, it does so in amazing fashion. The Celsius X VI II is a combination of a mobile phone and a watch that integrates a patented rewinding mechanism hidden within its hinge. Thanks to complex micromechanics, opening the phone activates the internal device. The design of this phone was very obviously influenced by tourbillion watches, which were invented back in the late 18th century. The vision for this phone is to have a completely mechanical mobile phone: a phone in which every function will be operated mechanically. Such a concept would probably seem alien in this day and age, but it seems that the price of such an interesting device is just $275,000 at the international watch and jewelry fair BaselWorld.

HMK 561 Carbon Fiber Electric Bike Concept

The HMK 561 Carbon Fiber Motorbike might seem like it’s from another planet, but seeing as there’s already a prototype in place, maybe humans did come up with it after all. The HMK 561 has special electrical properties that hold power right inside the frame. Since Carbon fiber is conductive, the designers are using it to distribute power instead of wires. The power will be used to power the lights and the motors between the rims. The bike also uses the energy to turn the wheels using a counter-turning axel in lieu of gears and chains, which hopefully means less maintenance as well.

Audio Lounger Concept Looks Desirable

We certainly don’t mind tech seeping into our everyday items, and the Audio Lounger concept certainly looks like one of those things we wouldn’t mind making room for. It sports four built-in high quality speakers and a (rather noticeable) large subwoofer, not to mention a touchscreen panel on the upper side of the seat to keep you in touch with your favorite music. This design by Matt Hardman also includes LED lights that offer ambient light that can be set with a range of colors, giving this concept lounger a futuristic look. Now we only have to wait for someone to mass produce this.

Need some 3G? Buy some 3G! Macrumors has some shots of the interface that will appear when you need to add data to your iPad data plan. You can either add 250MB for $14.99 or change to an unlimited plan for $26.99 a month. You can also cancel your plan right from the iPad, an fascinating concept.
Sony’s ultra-compact concept shooter will come with an APS sensor, UI shows up on video
Yesterday we brought you pictures of the touchscreen-loving user interface on Sony’s genre-straddling camera concept, so what better way to improve on that than with video and a few specs? Beyond the break you shall find one of those excessively stylized promotional vids you know and love to hate, but tolerating the fluff with reward you with some nice hints about how the shooter is operated plus finally some word on what’s inside. An Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor is touted, along with the accompanying capability to shoot 1080p AVCHD video. While we still find the design of these interchangeable lens cameras ridiculously appealing, there is one thing we have to complain about and that’s the clunky naming scheme. Please Sony, give us something sexier to call it than an “ultra-compact camera concept” — how about the Sony Beta, it comes after Alpha and is typically used to denote an unfinished product. You can have that one for free.

HMK 561 electric bike concept seats you on the battery, makes you significantly more attractive

Most electric bikes are fairly sordid affairs, little more than an ordinary bicycle with a motorized hub, a strap-on battery pack and regenerative braking capabilities (if you’re lucky). Not this HMK 561 electric bicycle concept, which took home an iF Design Award for some seriously forward thinking. It’s not just the stylish forward rake of this juiced cruiser that’s innovative, it’s the frame — composed completely of a conductive carbon fiber weave that allows the bike’s body to not just pass electricity to the motors, but actually store it like a giant capacitor. Factor in integrated lights and a pinch of that aforesaid regenerative braking at each axle, and you’ve just about got the bicycle of our dreams. Oh, and did we mention a prototype has already been built? Yeah.

Sony shows off the Alpha concept camera menus and screenshots
We told you about Sony’s new concept cameras that were announced during PMA, and now that things have calmed down a bit, we’re starting to see some details. Specifically, what’s going on with the menu system, and what exactly is going to make these cameras so interesting.
Infinity Bath comes with own touchscreen display

Hmmm, it looks as though everything needs to have a touchscreen display these days, otherwise it will not be deemed as chic. Well, the Infinity Bath you see here has its own custom waterproof touchscreen that allows you to control a plethora of conditions including aromatherapy settings, water temperature, music and hydro-massage modes. Unfortunately for those who have opened their chequebooks, ready to write down the amount to bring one home, this is but a concept at point of publishing so you will just have to give it a pass.

More Sony camera concept details

Sony’s DSLR camera concept that made its debut at PMA 2010 has been further expanded in terms of details via some screenshots of its menu system as well as LCD display. It seems as though this concept camera will boast a touchscreen-style menu system to keep up with the times, although would that impact the battery life noticeably or not is another question for a different day. There is still no word on its specifications, so we will just have to wait until more details are released in due time.
