DIY: A quick and dirty $20 projector ceiling mount
I had a problem. I was getting in a couple home theater projectors for review, but I didn’t want to just sit them on a table in the middle of my office. It’s already cluttered enough. The obvious solution was to mount them on my ceiling. However, I’m cheap and didn’t want to spend any [...]
HP MediaSmart add-in adds TiVo compatibility, enables video transfers to and fro
For those enjoying media bliss thanks to a little MediaSmart box humming away somewhere in the corner, life just got a even more lovely. HP has announced a partnership with TiVo that allows MediaSmart users to install a Windows Home Server add-in, enabling the two devices to talk sweet nothings to each other. From within the WHS console you’ll be able to suck recorded content from the TiVo onto the MediaSmart’s expansive storage array and, from there, play it on any of your compatible devices (PC, Mac, Xbox, PS3, etc.). Or, when you start to miss those happy TiVo sounds, you can send that content back over to DVR to view from there. The WHS extension is available right now to MediaSmart owners, so get on with the downloading already.

Verizon Rugged Casio Brigade C741 Is Currently Available

The Casio Brigade C741 was approved by the FCC a few months back, but surprisingly it seems that the phone has already been available in various Verizon retail stores without much fanfare. Some folks have already managed to purchase the device, and it also seems that it can be ordered via telesales. Apparently the Brigade C741 will be going for $249 after a $50 mail-in rebate, and will come with the customary (and mandatory) contract. It should begin to be sold nationwide from March 14th, which is just around the corner, so keep your eyes and ears open if this is the phone that you’re checking out at the moment.

Dost thou love tires? Then do not squander tires, for that is the stuff homemade shoes are made of
Craft has instructions for making your own retro shoes from an old tire and a pair of jeans. While I don’t think these will hold up to the heavy duty running I do (at least two miles a year), they might be a fun weekend project for those so inclined.
The question, however is whether you [...]
Corners Communication Warning Sign

Don’t you hate it when you’re walking down the street (or corridor) and as you turn the corner, someone else is also coming out from the corner, and you end up with this awkward situation when you’re both trying to get out of each other’s way? Well, if the Corner’s Communication Warning Sign becomes a reality and is implemented everywhere, we might be able to kiss such scenarios goodbye. When implemented, it will emit a little sound and light up when it senses that someone is approaching from around the bend, allowing you to be a little more alert when taking a corner, thus avoiding the awkward confrontation. It sounds simple, but it might just be the solution that you’ve been looking for

Buffalo USB Nintendo PC Game Pad

At first glance, this looks like an old school NES game pad, but upon closer inspection, you won’t find any Nintendo logo on this, but the word Buffalo emblazoned on the top right hand corner of the device instead. While the world has already moved on to USB 3.0, the Buffalo USB Nintendo PC Game Pad still remains in the past with a USB 1.1 connection, but that shouldn’t matter since all you’re going to do is mash buttons like there is no tomorrow. Perfect for shoot ‘em ups, it boasts a classic Turbo button for well rested thumbs as you cut a path of destruction with your aeroplane. Would you fork out $22 for a piece of retro memory?

ASUS Eee PC 1201PN and Eee Top 2010PNT with Ion 2 caught lounging around at CeBIT

You didn’t think ASUS would let Acer be the only one with a next-generation Ion netbook, did you? While wandering around ASUS’s CeBIT booth we couldn’t help but notice some new Ion 2 systems, including the 12.1-inch Eee PC 1201PN. With an identical chassis to the 1201N that we reviewed a few months back, the 1201PN swaps out the Diamondville Atom for a new Pine Trail N450 processor and a discrete NVIDIA GPU. We couldn’t figure out much more from the system properties, but the neighboring sign confirmed that Ion 2 would use NVIDIA’s Optimus to switch between the discrete and integrated GPU. Around the corner we also stumbled into that Eee Top 2010PNT we heard about awhile back, and just as rumored it packs a dual-core Atom D510 processor along its “next generation Ion.” Really more than anything we’re looking forward to testing the HD performance and battery life of these new Ion systems, but until then we’ll be stuck watching the video below of the 1201PN playing a 720p promo clip.

Sony’s ultra-durable DSC-TX5 hands-on: ice, ice, baby
Now here’s how to show off a durable camera. While a number of companies we’ve seen at PMA had non-interactive displays to exemplify just how waterproof their shooters were, Sony went one step further and put a pair of its DSC-TX5 in a block of ice. Yes, we could pick this one up and play with it — as well as another pair that were submerged in water of milder temperatures — and from our time with the camera, there was no fogginess and the shots were very clear for its class — no replacement for a DSLR, but it’s certainly easier to fit in our pocket while falling down the ski slopes (and capturing our failures in 720p, should we choose to publish the embarrassment). Also spotted? The DSC-H55, but with the HX5V just around the corner and sporting a similar form factor plus GPS and TransferJet, we’re having a hard time getting too excited about that one.

Motorola Devour in the wild once again
We’ve already seen the Motorola Devour in the wild once, but with the official Verizon launch right around the corner and pre-sales underway, it looks like at least one more unit has made it out into the world. Great — but we’d like a video of this thing and its mid-range processor running Flash, please.
[Thanks, Zach]

At last, a PDA so rugged I can hammer nails with it
Here’s a question. What use is an iPad if you live IN AN AVALANCHE? Even its high-quality multi-touch screen won’t help it there. And what if you like to SWIM IN POOLS OF MAGMA? How will you check your email then? Not on your Windows Phone! It will have melted! This is why you need the AIS Ultra-Rugged RPDA37!
Rumors a-swirling: Canon to put out revised 1D, L lenses next week?
Canon appears to have an actual sieve in charge of holding their secrets, since not a day goes by that I don’t hear about this or that new patent or camera just around the corner. Maybe it’s just their canny marketing division seeding leak sites, and if so, bravo. But to business: if you are a millionaire, this is probably a post for you, since everything involved is high-end. I know we’re a big source of news for the fantastically rich, so I thought I’d write it up.
The rumor is that next week, Canon will be firing off a 1D mk IV in our general direction that sports a whopping 32 megapixels. I can’t be the only one that thinks that’s not only not true, but absolutely ridiculous. I can see 20 with an ISO improvement, but 32? Why not 50, guys? That’d be just as useful to the guys who use 1Ds.
