New Lithium-sulfur Batteries From The Folks At Stanford
![]()
All the coolest gadgets in the market probably have a common problem – battery life. With plenty of external batteries being created to sustain your iPhone when used in an extended trip, it’s obvious that battery technology is lagging behind. If the new lithium-sulfur technology developed by the folks at Stanford becomes mature, we might just have a solution to our battery woes. This new technology is apparently safer, and more importantly (actually safety is probably more important); it currently achieves 80 percent more capacity than lithium-ion batteries. The downside is that it’s still far from becoming a mass market product, as the charge cycles of just 40-50 times compared to the 300-500 times of lithium-ion batteries aren’t anything to shout about. Hopefully they manage to tweak it and we’ll see a significant boost in battery life in all our devices sooner rather than later.

Is the Viliv N5 launching in May?
Viliv’s first clamshell is coming soon. We knew that. But the company was previously very quiet about when. Apparently though, the N5 could launch as soon as May. *fingers crossed*
Video: NBA JAM teaser
Remember NBA JAM? Remember that there’s a new version (“new” like how Hollywood just re-makes old movies now) coming out for the Wii? EA Sports has released the above teaser video—and it’s truly a teaser; don’t blink or you’ll miss it.
There’s apparently supposed to be a much more involved launch on Spike TV tonight. Hopefully [...]
Chocolate Powered Racing Car

First we had a look at the Carpuccino that ran on coffee, taking up to 50 cups of espresso to move a mile. Hopefully mileage of this £200,000 Chocolate Powered Racing Car is better, thanks to the efforts of students at the University of Warwick. Touted to be the world’s first sustainable Formula 3 racing car, it comes with a top speed of 135 miles per hour and can surprisingly hit the magical zero to 60 mark in a mere 2.5 seconds. We do wonder whether the brand of the chocolate matters or not…

High Heels Get The Fashion Light Treatment

It sure seems like tech, or at least cute lights, are making headways into the fashion industry. After the recent wired dress that lights up, next we’ve got three-inch heels that light up. It kind of feels like those sneakers we had back when we were kids that would flash red whenever you took a step, guess the idea is all grown up now, huh? Maybe it will help people avoid stepping on each others’ toes when you’re at the clubs. Hopefully they made this to be powered kinetically, powered by your footsteps or something.

Microsoft bringing XNA Game Studio 4.0 to GDC this week, does 3D gaming for Windows Phone

We’ve all had a feeling that Microsoft is holding back some pretty big surprises (or at least completely reasonable revelations) when it comes to Windows Phone 7 Series and gaming, and here at GDC this week it sounds like we’re going to get a little glimpse into that. Microsoft is unveiling its new XNA Game Studio 4.0, which lets developers work on games for Windows Phone 7 Series, Xbox 360 and Windows PC. The integration with Visual Studio 2010 that we saw the other day allows developers to build a single project and then make slight modifications to let it run on each platform respectively. Most importantly, Microsoft specifically mentions that 4.0 will include hardware accelerated 3D APIs for Windows Phone 7 Series — not stunning, giving the fact that Zune can do 3D games (and is supported by XNA), but relieving just the same. Other phone-related tidbits are also telling: there will be fairly deep Xbox LIVE integration, including unlocking achievements from phone-based games and push notifications for asynchronous turn based gaming. Hopefully we can get some real live multiplayer gaming going as well, but there’s no mention of that just yet. Microsoft promises “much, much more” will be revealed at MIX 2010, but for now we’re gonna dig for all we can here at GDC.

Just when you thought that having 8 hours of battery life on your netbook was something amazing and phenomenal, along comes MSI with the claim of up to 15 hours of battery life for the Wind U160. Of course, that is but in theory, and under controlled conditions which include having the netbook run in Eco mode. Garmin Colorado 400 series discontinued

For folks who have followed Garmin and its myriad of GPS navigation devices over the years, chances are you would have noticed the Colorado series. Sad news then as Garmin will be discontinuing the Colorado 400 series. Of course, not many will shed tears as the Colorado series never really took off since it always languished in the shadow of the Oregon touch-screen devices. Hopefully technical as well as hardware support will continue for at least a few more years before the original owners move on to something better if they haven’t done so already.

Weinmann portable voice-guided ventilator

Weinmann of Germany has unveiled a new portable voice-guided ventilator that is specially optimized for EMR and military personnel who perform cardiopulmonary resuscitations in the field. Dubbed the MEDUMAT Easy CPR, it will provide unmistakable spoken instructions whenever you use, giving perfect timing of chest compressions thanks to its integrated metronome. The ventilator itself enables one to manually generate a ventilated breath by activating MEDUtrigger on the mask. This allows you to integrate MEDUMAT Easy CPR into the entire CPR process according to your timing – neat, eh? Hopefully this thing doesn’t run out of juice during the most crucial moments.

Bourne Energy BPP-2 hydroelectric backpack

Check out the Bourne Energy BPP-2 hydroelectric backpack which allows you to tote your very own energy generator wherever you are, although you must be in fairly good shape to make sure this 30-pound, 500-watt generating hydroelectric plant stays securely on your back at all times without slowing you down. After all, would you rather walk around with this instead of five dozen solar panels? It retails for $3,000 a pop where the civilian edition is concerned, and can be used in streams moving 7.5 feet per second. Hopefully the prototype will be speeded up soonest possible to meet the 2012 release dateline.
