ArduIMU quadcopter boasts sonar to avoid unwanted crashes

This is no ordinary toy, as it is a DIY ArduIMU quadcopter from Jose Julio that boasts not only infrared but ultrasonic sensors as well, letting it detect obstacles and fly around them without breaking a sweat. Not only that, the quadcopter is also full well capable of hovering in just one place, returning to the correct altitude even when it is forced down by hand or wind – talk about being a persistent little flyer! Since a picture is worth a thousand words, we hope you enjoy a lengthy “read” through the video right after the jump.

MacBook refresh gets official with 10-hour battery

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Macbook_Refresh_Gets_Official’; Weird, but there it is, the leaked MacBook refresh is now official, on Tuesday, just as we thought. The 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo refresh with NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics and longer 10-hour battery life (up from 7 hours) is sitting up, nice and pretty on Apple’s very own store in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, and a few other sites. It’s still $999 making it a better deal for the moment than the similarly spec’d 13-inch MacBook Pro listing for $1,199. Expect it to go global shortly. A few more screengrabs after the break as Apple gets its house in order.
Update: It’s live for purchase in the US, as well as the US education store (starts at $950). Ships within 24 hours, too.
[Thanks, Jose and Peter]

Solar Mobile Charging Kiosks

Everybody seems to go going down the eco-friendly path nowadays, and that’s probably a good thing. Now industrial designer Vino Jose has come up with a Solar Mobile Charging Kiosk concept that allows users to charge their cell phones on renewable solar energy. It looks pretty good, and should allow folks to charge their cell phones in public areas, though there doesn’t seem to be able visible way to lock your phone to the station. You wouldn’t want to drop your new iPhone there and return 20 minutes later to find it missing, right?

Big time World Cup sponsors like Sony and Adidas are failing at the Internet

You guys have heard of Google, right? Congratulations, you’re smarter than the likes of Sonyand Adidas! A new study has found that these companies, and other prominent FIFA World Cup sponsors, like Coca-Cola and Emirates, have failed to leverage Google (specifically) and the Internet (more generally) to link themselves to the event. You’d think that after shelling out so much money to be known as “the official TV of the FIFA World Cup” or whatever they’d have a guy making sure their Web sites pop up when you search for, you know, “soccer world cup” and “world cup 2010.” I wouldn’t be surprised if CrunchGear ranks higher in Google searches at this point!

Artificial Muscle ramps up production — expect touchscreens that push back in 2011

Last we heard from Artificial Muscle, the company was trying to convince hospitals, cell phone manufacturers and more that its technology — a silicon film that expands and contracts with an applied voltage — would provide a real sense of touch to their cold, hard touchscreens. On at least three counts, it has succeeded. The San Jose Mercury News reports that two cell phone manufacturers are planning Artificial Muscle-based products in 2011, and that an “electronics entertainment product” will be released this Christmas. The company also plans to produce 1 million of the electronic actuators per month to anticipate further demand. While the Mercury News notes that Artificial Muscle’s product isn’t the holy grail of haptic feedback — the entire screen stiffens when pressed, not just the spot you touch — its adoption means the company may have set events in motion to ultimately reach that goal.

Current MacBook Pro SKU given mark of death in Best Buy database?

We’ll admit to not being leading the field of study in Best Buy-ology, but here comes a new quiz for us care of a tipster who sent TUAW a screenshot of the inventory screen that shows what looks to be the current MacBook Pro SKU with status: deleted. What that means is no new orders can be made for that unit, at least for that particular store. Sign of impending MBP refresh? Intel certainly had us riled up last month with that Core i5-infused flier, but we won’t get fooled again. Don’t hold your breath for this one, but if more telltale signs start popping up, we’ll be sure let ya know.
Update: Giving credit where due; the image originates from the MacRumors forums.
Update II: Another tipster familiar with Best Buy’s systems wrote in and noted that “Deleted only means that the that particular store is having it pulled from their planogramed assortment.” Sorry to burst your bubble.
[Thanks, Jose R]
