Intel’s new Gulftown i7-980X CPU reviews well

By Dave Freeman

Intel cut loose some benchmarking samples of their new, top of the line CPU, the i7-980X Extreme Edition. This is not a CPU intended for the causal use, but rather aim directly at the gaming market. MSRP for the CPU all by itself is a jaw dropping $999, and rumors are already circulating that the OEMs are already looking at coming out with systems that utilize the new processors.

New addition to Creative Lab’s Aurvana series

By Jimin Brelsford

I don’t completely understand this fascination with in-ear headphones. Are regular headphones just so bulky and inconvenient that its worth the hassle and lower audio quality? Especially considering that in order to start getting decent sound, you need to drop at least $100. However, for those of who enjoy these marvels of miniaturization, Creative Labs [...]

It’s tax season, a time of year that identity thieves are looking to prey on unsuspecting victims. That’s why we’ve joined forces with Fellowes to give away five of their new Microshred Series shredders (specifically the MS-450Ci), which literally shred paper into dust (3,000 pieces to be exact). Protect your sensitive information and enter to win! Here’s how Fellowes describes its product:

“Fellowes Microshred Series shredders are designed to help consumers and business professionals protect their confidential information at home and in the workplace. Asus Eee PC to expand category further

Asus Eee PC to expand category further

Asus is certainly milking its Eee PC brand for all it is worth, throwing in a couple more lines for you to consider before you part with your hard earned money the next time round. We’re talking about the Eee Pc Diary and the Eee PC Prime, where the former will be a bunch of netbooks that target folks who are always on-the-go (isn’t that who netbooks are meant for in the first place, anyway?), boasting a long battery life with a stronger focus on reliability and mobile connections. As for the Eee PC Prime, it is not a secret Autobot ready to save the world from the clutches of the Decepticons, but will be a high-end Eee PC instead. As for the Eee PC Seashell line, well, that’s a bunch of affordable Eee PCs.

PRS Guitarbud jacks your axe, ego into iPhone / iPod touch

By Darren Murph

Whatever happened to that dreamy Line 6 / Apple tie-up? Who knows, right? While those two sort out their future behind the scenes, Paul Reed Smith Guitars is stepping up to take advantage of an obvious market opportunity. The newly announced Guitarbud is a simplistic accessory that allows axe slingers to jack their guitar into an iPhone or second-generation iPod touch, all while providing a headphone output in order to keep the noise making to yourself. We’re told that the device works with pretty much any recording-supported app (even Apple’s own Voice Memos), though PRS obviously recommends that you check out its JamApp guitar amp simulator / tuner / training tool. Best of all, it’s available today for £29.95 (or $29.95 here in the States), putting you just a few yard mowings away from securing your own personal aural sanctuary. Too bad the reviews from early adopters aren’t so promising…

Razer announces drivers for the Mac

By Dave Freeman

Razer announced today that they are going to be releasing Mac drivers for all of their future products. This comes on the heels of the announcement that Steam is coming to the Macintosh as well.

Razer promises Mac support for all upcoming products

By Donald Melanson

Razer already provides full Mac support for a few of its gaming peripherals — including the Naga and DeathAdder — and basic support for others, but it’s now taken avantage of GDC to “reaffirm” its commitment to Mac users. That apparently means that “all upcoming” Razer products — including the company’s line of StarCraft II peripherals — will boast full Mac support out of the box, and that the company will be rolling out updates to some of its existing products “later this year,” including the Orochi, Mamba, and Imperator gaming mice. First Steam, now Razer peripherals — dare we say it’s a good time to be a Mac gamer?

Review: Scottevest Evolution Travel Jacket

By Dave Freeman

Short version: Scott Jordan understands geeks. Or at least, he understands what geeks want in clothing. The Evolution Travel Jacket takes the same basic concept as the other Scottevest products, and refines it. The Evolution is a jacket with more pockets then most people will ever need, and could quite easily replace a backpack or messenger bag when traveling.

Toshiba has plans for its own tablets

Toshiba has plans for its own tablets

Toshiba is currently working on rolling out its own tablet range that will go up against the iPad from Apple, and the Japanese company hopes to see this line of devices to arrive sometime later this year at best, or early 2011 otherwise. Toshiba isn’t exactly new to the tablet scene since they rolled out the Journe Touch to folks living in Europe late last year. We still have no idea as to the type of operating system which Toshiba’s new tablets will run on, but if history is of any indicator, we are probably looking at a form of Windows to grace these tablets.

Boeing announces compact, energy-efficient 3D camera

By Donald Melanson

Yes, even the military has gone 3D. Helping it in that endeavor is Boeing, which has just announced a tiny new 3D camera that’s one-third the size and consumes one-tenth the power of comparable 3D imaging systems. While it will also be made available for commercial use, it seems like military will be first in line to use the cameras, with Boeing noting that it’s potential applications including “mapping terrain, tracking targets and seeing through foliage,” and adding that it’s already testing the camera on unmanned aerial vehicles. The biggest drawback to the camera at the moment is that it’s only able to take 3D still images, but Boeing says it will “soon” add 3D video capability as well. Details are otherwise pretty hard to come by, as you might expect, and pricing is no doubt best left unsaid.

[Thanks, Graham]

That TiVo Series 3 on Woot isn’t a bad deal

By Matt Burns

The TiVo Premiere will be here real soon so it isn’t much of a surprise to see a Series 3 on Woot. You might want to consider it, too. The Series 3 might be old, but it’s still a great DVR. It even has a few advantages over the TiVoHD line and upcoming Series4.

Gunnar Optiks joining forces with Carl Zeiss to make new lenses

By Scott Merrill

gunnarGunnar Optiks, makers of advanced lenses to ease eye strain for computer users, is teaming up with Carl Zeiss to bring a whole new class of “optics” to you. Not a whole lot of details at this point, other than Zeiss coatings and tints “will be used on the Gunnar Optiks lenses to change the lenses to suit specific digital viewing environments.”
