Apple’s callous response to iPhone 4 defect matched only by its fanboys’ blind dedication

By Dan A.

What’s more sad: the very fact that the iPhone 4 is completely unusable if you’re left-handed—President Obama is left-handed!— or that Apple fanboys are doing everything in their power to divert attention away from the issue? Check MacRumors. It’s a fine site, yes, and one I read every day, but to call it an “Apple fan site” would be like calling the Sun hot. “Upset that your brand new iPhone 4 doesn’t work? Don’t be: other phones do this, too!” Because that’s what you want to hear: your phone may be a piece of junk, but so is the other guy’s phone, so it all works out. Um, no. It doesn’t work like that.

iPhone 4 to have 512MB of RAM, double the 3GS and iPad?

By Dan A.

Apple has traditionally been — how shall we put it — cagey with revealing memory and CPU specifics of its mobile devices, but MacRumors is today reporting its discovery that the fourth-gen iPhone’s RAM apportionment will be a very healthy 512MB. We’ve heard similar rumblings from reliable sources of our own. What it means is that iPhone 4 users can look forward to not only the same processor (though potentially at a lower speed) as their iPad compatriots, but also double the memory allowance. Of course, this will hardly be the first handset to offer half a gig for the OS to dance inside, but at least Apple’s keeping up with the times. Wouldn’t wanna disappoint all those pre-orderers now, would we?

AT&T offering price protection (or iPhone 4 swap) to recent 3GS buyers

By Dan A.

We’ve been able to confirm some leaked information out of modmyi.com today that AT&T is doing us a solid by extending price protection for recent iPhone 3GS buyers by just a little bit. If you purchased a 3GS — either the 16GB or 32GB model — between May 7 and May 14, you’ll have until June 14 to get credited the difference between the price you paid and the $149 / $199 they’re charging now; if you bought it after the 14th of May, you’d have at least until the 14th of this month anyway, so it’s effectively a one-week extension. If you’d rather trade up to an iPhone 4 rather than pocketing some cash and keeping the 3GS, you’ve got an option there, too: anyone who picked up a 3GS between May 7 and May 21 can preorder an iPhone 4 by June 21 and get the new phone for only the difference in cost, assuming you bring in your 3GS when you pick it up.

On a related note, modmyi.com is also reporting that AT&T corporate stores are set to open at 7AM on the 24th, iPhone 4 launch day, though we’re not able to confirm this one. Word on the street is that new customers will only be able to activate one line and existing customers will be able to buy one iPhone 4 per line of service, clearly an attempt to stretch inventory as far as it’ll go. With the way Apple’s setting up for preorders and launch-day delivery, it seems like a lot of this chaos and bedlam is going to be avoided — but hey, it’s Apple. You never know.

NBC and Time Warner inform Apple they’ll be sticking to Flash, thank you very much

By Dan A.

When the iPad bandwagon was launched in late January, ABC and Netflix quickly jumped onboard with tailor-made apps, while CBS and others started transitioning their content to HTML5-compliant formats, all in the name of not being left behind by the revolution. As it turns out, however, some content providers will be letting this ride pass them by, at least for the moment. The New York Post today reports that big media heavyweights Time Warner and NBC Universal have turned their noses up at the iPad’s high entry demands and will be sticking to what works:

Sources said several large media companies, including Time Warner and NBC Universal, told Apple they won’t retool their extensive video libraries to accommodate the iPad, arguing that such a reformatting would be expensive and not worth it because Flash dominates the Web.

According to the NYP article, these conglomerates have been emboldened by the forthcoming arrival of competing tablets from the likes of Dell and HP, and will be seeking their fortunes in the mobile space atop Adobe’s winged stallion of web domination that we commonly know as Flash. This is a decision sure to end in tears — we just don’t know who’ll be doing the crying when it all shakes out.

The “Get a Mac” Ads are gone

Friends, it happened. Those long-running ads featuring John Hodgman and Justin Long as PC and Mac, are over. MacBook refresh includes Mini DisplayPort that pumps out HDMI audio

By Dan A.

When it comes to port standardization, Apple marches to the beat of its own drum… but in a rare show of leniency, the company’s newly refreshed MacBook will throw home theatre aficionados a bone. Though Cupertino hasn’t moved to actually include an HDMI-out (sacre bleu!), a new support document shows its Mini DisplayPort now provides an audio signal alongside the video feed. Should you move to purchase a VESA-compliant Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter like the one Apple’s apparently not selling, you’ll finally be able to enjoy digital sound without dropping $70 for the privilege. Fancy that! Now we just need USB 3.0 ports — placed on opposite sides of the machine — a SATA 6G socket and a FireWire 400 port. What can we say? We’re the sentimental sort.

MacBook Air feeling the wind of change?

By Dan A.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/MacBook_Air_feeling_the_wind_of_change’; A tipster who apparently correctly predicted the recent MacBook Pro refresh has alerted Australian Macworld to a new SKU making its way through Apple’s systems down under. According to said “well-placed” source, the MC516LL/A K87 BETTER BTR-USA code string identifies an incoming batch of all-new MacBook Air laptops. This makes all the sense in the world given the recent hubbub about Intel offering ULV versions of its 32nm Core 2010 processors and the Air’s overdue need for an upgrade, but there is the proviso that this could also be referring to shipments of new 27-inch LCDs, to match the ones found on the latest iMac generation. Either way, we’re looking at some unannounced hardware rapidly making its way to Australia. Hey, doesn’t Apple make a habit of announcing new goodies on Tuesdays?

iPhone OS 4 unlocks 720p video capture, further solidifying iPhone HD?

By Dan A.

Last time on let’s-speculate-about-Apple-products, the New iPhone rumor mill dug up dirt on video chat and a 5 megapixel camera. Now, it appears there might be one more reason to call it the iPhone HD. MacRumors reports that the iPhone SDK 4 beta includes the value “AVCaptureSessionPreset1280x720,” leading some to believe Cupertino’s next phone will record video in 720p. Mind you, the iPhone 3GS was technically already capable of that feat, so this might not have anything to do with a new handset, but honestly, at this point the iPhone’s camera wouldn’t be competitive recording in a smaller format anyhow.

Steam for Mac building st… momentum; users compile feature list in anticipation

By Dan A.

So the new Steam UI just went live today, and soon we may be seeing that Mac version everybody’s been chattering about. I’m looking forward to it, and hoping the 9400M in my MacBook Pro will be able to handle Portal 2. Other, more practical people are putting together comprehensive “all we know” lists about the program, widely anticipated (in vain) as savior of gaming on the Mac. I don’t know, I’m thinking that a couple years from now we’ll look on Steam for Mac saying “remember that time Valve released its games for Mac and then nothing else happened, ever?”

The news is mostly good. List inside.

MacBook Pros with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M silicon making questionable graphics switching decisions

By Dan A.

“With every choice you make, ask yourself: is this a good choice, or is this a bad choice?” That’s the sage advice we were constantly given as tykes — and it’s advice that replays in our feeble brains every day as we write news. Turns out it’s also a piece of wisdom Apple’s latest round of MacBook Pros would be wise to heed, because currently, they’re making some awful decisions about when to turn on that power-sapping NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M discrete chipset. Read on to see what we mean.

[Thanks, Tom]

Next-generation iPhone Might Have Actually Been Pictured A While Back

Can’t seem to get enough of Apple’s upcoming iPhone? Pictures of what apparently is the upcoming iPhone have surfaced. Initially it was scoffed as a cloned device, but after a bit of digging, the folks over at Engadget managed to notice the similarities between this device and the mysterious iPhone pictured during the last-minute leak of the iPad. If the rumors are true, the upcoming iPhone will feature a front-facing camera, higher resolution camera with flash, and a higher resolution display.

Aside from that, MacRumors has managed to find some disassembled pictures of what is also touted as the design for the next iPhone. There are some minor discrepancies, but they claim it’s due to the disassembled pictures being that of a handmade demo unit.

So do you think that these leaked pictures are really that of the upcoming iPhone HD (or iPhone 4G)? Whether they’re real or not, they’re certainly making us look forward to June 22nd.

Update: It looks like this is the real deal, folks!
