AMD working on actual netbook chipset, not due until next year
AMD is finally looking to get into the netbook game for real. Forget about the thin-and-light NEO chipset that’s been out for a while—we’re talking about an honest, netbook-specific chipset based on the company’s Fusion initiative that’ll blend power-sipping CPUs with ATI graphics. The platform will draw between 10 and 15 watts of power and will be designed for screens 12 inches and smaller.
How the iPad, and the slate computer, will evolve in the next two years
With the iPad hitting pre-order in two days and shipping in April, it’s important to think about when and why to buy the iPad. Based on our understanding of the product lifecycle and expected moves by Apple’s competitors, we foresee big changes in the ultraportable landscape with the ultraportable/netbook as we now know it mutating [...]
Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t review

Who says you have to pick between a netbook and the coming onslaught of standalone tablet devices? Okay maybe some (eh hem Apple), but Lenovo’s trying to have it both ways with the IdeaPad U1 and the S10-3t. In clamshell mode the S10-3t looks like any old 10-inch netbook, but swivel around its capacitive mulitouch display and it turns into that slate device you’ve been dreaming of. That’s not all: the S10-3t is one of the first netbooks (or netveritbles) that has the new Intel 1.83GHz Atom N470 processor. But can the S10-3t straddle both worlds and do it well? And perhaps more importantly, is it worth the premium $649 price tag? That’s the question we’ve been asking ourselves for the last few days, so hit the break for some answers in our full review.

MSI starts shipping two 12.1-inch, AMD-powered Wind12 U230 netbooks
It sure took ‘em long enough — just over four months if you’re keeping score — but MSI has finally shipped its next-generation netbook. The AMD-powered Wind12 U230 has left the docks today in two distinct flavors (the U230-033 and U230-040), with both touting Windows 7 Home Premium, a 12.1-inch WXGA (1,366 x 768) display, ATI’s Radeon HD3200 graphics, 2GB of RAM, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a 6-cell battery and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The duo also features three USB sockets, VGA / HDMI outputs, an Ethernet port, audio in / out, a 4-in-1 card reader and a chassis that weighs in at 3.3 pounds. As for the differences? The former ships with an AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 under the hood and a 250GB HDD, while the latter sports an Athlon X2 L335 CPU and a 320GB platter. Both are available for the taking right now at NewEgg, though it’s on you to decide if the second model is really worth the extra $50 over the $429.99 base price.

Intel bringing dual-core Atom D510 processors to netbooks as the N500?
It was hard to be anything but disappointed when Intel’s dual-core Atom D510 processor started hitting nettops and was found to be no better performing than the earlier D330. Sure, it was more frugal, but most users were hoping for a bit more oomph not a bit less consumption. Soon, netbook users will seemingly get a taste of the same bitter pill, with talk that a netbook version of the D510 is in the works, likely called the N500. This is a rather less than shocking development and while it surely won’t mean you’ll finally get Crysis running on your Eee it could make for future netbooks that offer slightly better performance than their earlier brethren and yet deliver even longer battery life. Because, you know, if there’s one thing netbooks need today it’s greater longevity.
[Thanks, Jarrett]

Asus Eee PC 1005PR: High-res 10.1-inch screen, 10+ hour battery
Now we’re cooking with a substance that appears to be similar in smell, flame size, and cost per energy unit as “gas.” Asus’ impending Eee PC 1005PR is a 10.1-inch netbook with a 1366×768 resolution screen, Broadcom HD decoder chip, and up to 11 hours of battery life.
Netsee UNC-890 netbook
Netsee has introduced its latest super slim netbook known as the UNC-890 in the South Korea market, where it measures under an inch thin, tipping the scales at 920 grams. You will get an 8.9″ widescreen LCD display at 1,024 x 600 resolution, alongside an Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor, 1GB RAM, a 3-megapixel webcam, Wi-Fi connectivity and a 32GB SSD. You will be able to pick it up in either white or red colors. Seems pretty rudimentary, and would make for a great portable email and surfing machine but don’t expect it to do much more than that.

Active SaberTooth ZT 1.8-inch 64GB PATA Turbo ZIF SSD

If you’re looking for a new replacement 1.8-inch drive for your netbook, it’ll be worth your time to take a few minutes to peek at the Active SaberTooth ZT 1.8-inch PATA ZIF SSD, which is available in capacities of 32GB and 64GB. With read speeds up to 100MB/sec and write speeds up to 85MB/sec (thanks to a DRAM cache), it should be speedy enough for you to go about your business. The lack of moving parts means that the SaberTooth ZT is rugged enough to be used in industrial scenarios, or embedded and network computing applications. Since it has the same physical dimensions as your standard 1.8-inch hard drives, replacing your current 1.8-inch drive with the SaberTooth ZT shouldn’t be an issue. It’s currently available on Amazon for $169.95 (32GB) and $299.95 (64GB).

MSI Wind U160 netbook gets 15 hours of juice

Just when you thought that having 8 hours of battery life on your netbook was something amazing and phenomenal, along comes MSI with the claim of up to 15 hours of battery life for the Wind U160. Of course, that is but in theory, and under controlled conditions which include having the netbook run in Eco mode. Hopefully the final diagnosis will see it hit at least more than half of the advertised battery life. Other specifications of this $380 netbook include a 10″ LED display at 1.024 x 600 resolution, 1GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive and Windows 7 Starter Edition as the operating system of choice. Eee PC 1005PR is now official

The folks over at Asus decided to make the Eee PC 1005PR official by putting up its page online, making it the latest member of the Eee PC Seashell family. You will find the Broadcom Crystal HD graphics accelerator inside, which translates to smooth playback of high definition quality video on your little netbook – something not all netbooks can claim to do. Apart from that, Asus has kindly included ArcSoft Total Media Theater software that makes it a snap to watch HD videos right from the get go. Other specifications include a 10.1″ LED Backlight WXGA display, an Intel Atom Pineview N450 processor, 1GB RAM, a 250GB hard drive, the Broadcom BCM 70015 chipset, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity as well as Windows 7 Starter Edition holding everything together.

ASUS Eee PC 1005PR packs Broadcom Crystal HD and high-res screen
Today in Tales from ASUS we bring you the story of the 10.1-inch Eee PC 1005PR. While we didn’t catch this one hiding out in the overflowing CeBIT booth, it appears big A has gone and swapped out the screen on the 1005PE for one with a 1366 x 768-resolution and tucked a Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator inside, which means the little lappie should be able to handle some YouTube HD (at least after you download 10.1 Beta 3). Nothing special apart from that, as it’s standard netbook down the line: 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450, 1GB of RAM, and 320GB hard drive. No word on pricing or availability, but we’re guessing it’ll probably come in at under $400, like the Dell Mini 10 and HP Mini 210. It may not be a bad deal in the end, but we’re still holding out for the Ion 2-equipped 1201PN and for ASUS to someday slow down the frenetic pace of Eee PC iteration.

HP Mini 5101 cloned

Copycats from China have done it again – this time round it is the HP Mini 5101 that fell prey to the clones. However, this clone does go one up on the original since it improves on the latter’s specifications and features, as you will enjoy a better viewing experience thanks to its 11.6″ display at 1,366 x 768 resolution, larger chiclet keys for a more comfortable typing experience, a port that supposedly boosts your netbook’s 3G connectivity, and most interestingly enough, a cloned HP logo which looks picture perfect. Other specifications are pretty rudimentary such as an Intel Atom N450 processor, 1GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive and Wi-Fi connectivity, all going for around $337.
