Nikon D90 torn down, rebuilt in pink (video)

Words… what good are words when you’re trying to describe the horrific visage of a growling, rugged, heavyweight camera coated in the frilly tutu of the color spectrum, magenta? We shan’t try to describe the peculiar mix of revolt, disgust and subtle desire that this whole thing incites in us, and will just point you after the break for the video. There’s plenty of good clean fun to be had while exploring the dismantled D90 (though there’s one instance of foul language when the modder gets an electric shock, understandable) and if you’re of a nervous disposition you can always skip the shockingly pink finale.

It’s Spring rebate season for Canon

If you’re thinking of putting down some bread for a new lens, be sure to avail yourself of the various rebates in effect. Not that you’ll save more than $50 on a purchase of like a grand, but hey, that’s a couple filters or a lens bag right there. That 85mm 1.2L II is calling out my name — too bad I’m shaking change out of my old pants for ramen money right now. I guess it’ll have to wait until my ship comes in, or until I can flip these 20 MacBooks I… bought at a discount over in Jersey. Yes.

Nikon developing a Canon G11 rival?

The Canon PowerShot G series have always been one of the best compact shooters available. See that pic above? I shot that back in 2003 with a G3. Beautiful, isn’t? That’s Camp Tapico in Northern Michigan, where I spent every summer of my teenage life. Anyway, word on the street is that Nikon wants some of the action that the G series has enjoyed all by itself for so long. Better late then never, Nikon.

Nikon says it’s developing a competitor to Canon’s G11

Well, here’s something you don’t hear everyday — a Nikon exec saying that Canon’s PowerShot G11 is the “benchmark” against which other compact cameras are measured. According to Nikon UK’s senior product manager Kevin Egan, however, that may not be the case for much longer, as he says that Nikon is now developing a new Coolpix model that will give the G11 a run for its money. That word comes from an interview in the latest issue of Amateur Photographer, in which Egan also revealed that the camera will use “combine some of the technology of Nikon’s DSLRs with the build quality of a high-end Coolpix.” What’s more, Egan said that Nikon has actually planned to introduce the camera alongside its latest batch of Coolpix models, but that it wasn’t quite ready. No official word on when that new release date might be, but Nikon has already begun teasing something ahead of a press event on March 8th.

Mysterious yellow and black cards lead to wild Nikon speculation

You know what’s black and yellow all over, fits in the average mailbox and gets the imaginations of camera junkies running wild? These cards, that’s what. Over the past few days, mysterious cards have begun to arrive in the hands of Nikon users, and while the company’s name is nowhere to be found, the colors and hints are starting to build a case for something new. It seems a countdown from 8 has begun, with the first card stating “I am…” and the second “I am fun….” In case you weren’t aware, Nikon has yet to dabble in the Micro Four Thirds world (or even hint at a competitor like Samsung’s NX range), but whispers of a so-called EVIL lineup have been building steam. Nikon aficionados have pointed out that the countdown will end just prior to a UK press meeting on March 8th, which could very well mean that an all-new compact is just days away from being properly revealed. Or it could be nothing at all. Keep your expectations low — it’s better to be pleasantly surprised than deflated and alone, right?

We had a great time in Anaheim this past weekend checking out the Photo Marketing Association’s trade show spectacle. Nikon reveals countdown mystery

There has been a bunch of reports that came from France concerning a glossy mailing card which sports the number 8 in front alongside the text “I am…” on the back. This was followed up by a second card which was mailed out with then number 7 on the front and the text “I am fun” on the back. While there was no word “Nikon” available on those mailings, although the only thing remotely connected to Nikon would be black and yellow colors. After all, only Nikon users are the ones receiving those mailings, or so it seems. What do you think of this guerilla marketing campaign?

Nikon’s lens rebate program starting on the 28th

Get that wallet ready, Nikon’s annual instant rebate program is starting on the 28th. Pretty much always a good deal, Nikon loves to tempt the weak with their instant rebate offers on lenses and gear that they roll out on a yearly basis. Case in point – I bought my D300 back in 2008 (with the oh so popular 18-200 VR) and justified it to my wife as a “really great deal” because of the rebate. Luckily she’s a patient woman, and we’re still married.

Nikon teasing an EVIL camera?

To Canon shooters, all Nikon cameras are evil. But none are truly EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens). That may change soon, if the current tease campaign underway in France is any indication.

These little cards, counting down to March 5th if we assume one per business day — coincidentally, Nikon has scheduled a press conference in the UK for that very day! So far, the only clue is “Je suis fun,” meaning “I am fun,” which really could mean anything. But Nikon, like most camera companies, releases its point-and-shoots in batches (“je” is singular), and its DSLRs aren’t really supposed to be “fun.” So the speculation is that it’s something in between.

Canon Rebel T2i / 550D demonstrates 1080p video mode, collects glowing early preview

We seriously need to open up an Austrian branch of Engadget. After treating us to a titanium iPhone, the Governator’s homeland is now playing host to the first professionally shot 1080p video with the new T2i / 550D from Canon. Nino Leitner has shot a moody short film with a pre-production unit and his conclusion has been that the video you can obtain from the latest prosumer shooter is indistinguishable from the output of the mighty Canon 7D. High praise indeed, but not altogether unexpected considering the T2i sports an all-new 18 megapixel sensor (that is “very similar” to the 7D’s) and has had its 1080p recording upgraded to the requisite 30fps to make it a viable shooting mode. Nikon CoolPix ‘Style’ and ‘Life’ series hands-on

What, it wouldn’t be a camera convention without Nikon (and everyone else, for that matter) showing off a basket of new point-and-shoots. We knew what the company was bringing — selections from its “Style” and “Life” series, as well as the P100 superzoom we covered earlier this week — and now we’ve gotten our hands on the L22, S4000, L110, and S8000. There isn’t much to say, frankly — a collection of pocket shooters of various feature sets and various price ranges to cater to various demographics and psychographics. Still, we know you need to get that “fix” when it comes to pictures of gadgets, so let’s get on with it, shall we?
