The breast cancer rate is 10% higher on people\'s left side than right. Why? Some researchers think it\'s because people are inclined to sleep on their right side, and their boxsprings are pulling in electromagnetic radiation from FM and TV transmissions. Yes, everything around us is killing us, including our beds. Our beds! Thus, as we sleep ...

CTIA sues San Francisco over cellphone radiation law

San Francisco can have signed cellphone radiation labels into law, but the stickers won\'t stick without a fight -- the Cellular phone Industries Association (CTIA) just filed a complain in federal district court, claiming the hot law supersedes the FCC\'s authority to control radio emissions and misleads consumers into believing some phones are safer than ...

Acer’s LumiRead 600 hits the FCC with slow bursts of 2.4GHz radiation

Acer's 6-inch LumiRead e-reader just hit the FCC, but there's not a lot to learn -- the company smartly withheld the user's manual and detailed images, so all we have are the triplicate forms of stalwart government employees trying to irradiate themselves. Those thankfully painless tests reveal that the Kindle-alike will have standard 802.11b/g WiFi ...

Fantastic European Space Agency photo shows light from the time of the Big Bang

Oh, the joy this photo brings me. It was taken by the European Space Agency’s Planck telescope over the period of a year, and it shows, among other treasures, some of the oldest light in the universe. We’re talking light from right around the time of the Big Bang, light that’s 13.7 billion years [...]

Canon develops X-ray- and pain-free mammogram device

We don’t cover medical technology here on CrunchGear usually, but one of the things Canon is currently working on in that area sounds pretty interesting. According to Japanese daily The Nikkei, the company has developed a machine that helps detecting breast cancer without using X-rays (it’s estimated [PDF] that in the US alone, some 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer yearly).

Innpu offers wired cell phone

Yes, at first glance, the title doesn’t seem quite right. Just what the heck is a wired cell phone, you ask? The only time it is wired would be having it charged, and even so that does not apply to the Palm Pre with the Touchstone charging surface. Well, Innpu has rolled out the first wired cell phone in the world, boasting built-in retractable headphones. Whenever you receive an incoming call, just pull out the integrated headphone line, and when the call is done and over with, the headset and headphones retract automatically in order to reduce the risk of cell phone radiation to the user’s head, while ensuring both hands are free to do as you please. Hmmm, something tells us it would be even more prudent to invest in a Bluetooth headset if you’re so concerned about safety. [Press Release]

San Francisco passes cellphone radiation law

The people of San Francisco will soon fall under a new cellphone radiation law that requires retailers to post notices on how much radiation is emitted by cellphones they sell. This is touted to be the first kind in the United States, although those in the cellphone industry claim that it could very well impede sales and mislead consumers into believing some phones are safer than others. What’s your take on the situation? Even if the new iPhone 4 were to emit enough radiation to turn you into the Hulk, would that stop you from picking it up? Nay, we say, and the impact would probably be minimal.

Despite scientific studies showing no link between tumours and mobile phone radiation, San Francisco have decided that it is in the consumer’s best interest to clearly display the specific absorption rates (SAR) emitted by every phone sold.
The law requires phone retailers to display this information next to each phone in their store in at least 11 point type.
