Lunch.com Launches Communities: Yelp meets Wordpress meets Wikipedia

[SXSW] We published about Lunch.com when it launched in April 09 at Web 2.0. Lunch.com connects people with similar interests via the proprietary “Similarity Engine” and provides them a platform to publish and share opinions and reviews about various topics.
Today, Lunch.com announced the release of “Communities on Lunch” a new feature that allows users to manage their own review websites on the Lunch domain, with a combination of their own content and contributions from others. Anyone with a passion is able to become a community manager, using Lunch’s broad range of tools to create, select and share the most valuable content. Content creators can choose from ratings, reviews, wikis, lists, and Twitter-length micro reviews to express their opinions and share their advices. The community manager can set a simple editorial guideline by providing review templates to the community members to ensure consistency of content.

Google Now Allows You To Check If Stock Is Available Nearby

Have you ever been in a scenario where you google for an item online, find it at a store nearby, fight through traffic to get there, only to find out that it’s out of stock? Well, Google is looking to help you tackle that issue, with its latest “In stock nearby” feature for mobile devices. When searching for products sold by participating retailers (Best Buy, Sears, Williams-Sonoma, Pottery barn and West Elm), if there is a blue dot next to the item, you can click on the “In stock nearby” link to check if the item is “In stock” or has “Limited Availability” near you (as long as you’ve enabled My Location or manually specified your location). It’s currently available for iPhone, webOS and Android-powered devices, though there isn’t any mention of Windows Mobile in the official post, is this a sign of things to come? If you’re a retailer and want to participate in this program, Google has a form that you can fill out to be considered.

Mobiado Classic 712GCB luxury phone

Mobiado is back with another millionaire-friendly phone – the Classic 712GCB. This handset is touted to be an “expression of mechanical perfection, mastering of aesthetic details, and the integrity of consistent craftsmanship.” When going through the specifications list, it is not too far away from the Classic 712ZAF, featuring a candybar form factor accompanied by a 2.2″ QVGA display, 3G connectivity, GPS support, a web browser, music player and a 5-megapixel camera with flash. Made from stainless steel, it will also have a touch of luxury with large sapphire crystal plates and 24K gold wrapping its exterior. Heck, even the handset’s keys are also made out of sapphire crystal hand-painted with gold. No idea on pricing, but this is a classic case of “if you have to ask…”

Samsung S Life to roll out at CTIA Wireless

CTIA Wireless which will be happening this coming 23rd to 25th March ought to see Samsung unveil their S Life idea – we still have no clue as to what S Life is all about, but according to Samsung, it is “as much a feeling as it is an incredible achievement” and it ought to bring “enrichment through technology and simplicity through innovation.” Hmmm, do you think this is some sort of new user interface or hardware? Regardless, March 23 is not too far away, so being patient ought to do the trick here.

Etirement Lamp

Check out the Etirement Lamp that comes equipped with a dimmer, although it works differently since it is composed of both a skin as well as a skeleton. All you need to do is pull the rod which you see in the center in order to adjust the level of intensity. The level of the light’s intensity can be raised or lowered according to the distortion of the fabric membrane. According to the Etirement Lamp’s designer, Rémi Bouhaniche, he sees the temporary, changing shape of the Etirement “a poetic time from a daily action.” Neat, but I must say that the temptation is there to just poke a hole through the membrane simply because I can.

Rock Your Firefox Blog

[SXSW] Yesterday, Mozilla launched its new blog “Rock Your Firefox”, featuring the coolest add-ons for Firefox, the popular open source browser. The first post featured Yoono, a social networking site aggregator and management tool that lets people chat or update their status in various social websites, and this, from the Firefox sidebar while they browse the web. The latest version (7.1) was released last month. I have not used Yoono in a while, it might now do the same job as Hootsuite in a smaller space (from the side bar instead of using the whole browser window); well, I have to check it. The second post features Xsticky, a virtual sticky note add-on that lets you jot down thoughts and put them over any web page. Rock Your Firefox will be a good online information center to discover new adds-on quickly.

Will The Horror Flicks Of The Future Call Your Cell Phone?
Ever been in the movies to catch a horror flick, and halfway through the movie, in that moment of suspense, yell out “RUN!” or something similar? Obviously the person on screen couldn’t hear you (and as a result met a horrible end), but what if you could influence the person on screen? That’s what the folks behind Last Call are aiming to do with their interactive horror film. Audience members will be asked to supply their cell numbers before the movie, and at one point, a phone number is selected at random from the list, and will be called. Voice recognition software will then listen to the person’s commands and the story will unfold based on their instructions. Of course, instructions will most likely be the usual things like “run, stay, turn right” or something along those lines. Trying to get the character to tap dance or sing the national anthem probably won’t work. It’s a cool concept, and will be interesting to see how it’s implemented. What would happen if the person left his phone on silent, and didn’t pick up, though?

ExiTool Seatbelt Cutter For Paranoid Drivers

Ever wonder what would happen if you crashed your car, and the seatbelt got jammed, trapping you in the vehicle, while you’re busy wondering if your car is going to blow up (like they always do in the movies)? If you have the ExiTool handy, such a scenario would become less of an issue, not that we’re saying crashing your car is a non-issue. The ExiTool clips onto your seatbelt and it’s ever ready in the event you need to slash through your seatbelt. As an added bonus, it has a tungsten window-smashing tip and button-cell powered flashlight in the event you need additional light. It’s currently listed as “coming soon”, with the price tag of $26.99, though the question is, would you shell out $26.99 for something to cut through your seatbelt in the event of emergency?

K-Tcouh X90+ Twister Phone

The name K-Tcouh X90+ will probably make you think that it’s a typo; after all, shouldn’t it be “K-Touch”? Regardless of whether it’s a knockoff or not, this phone sports a touchscreen display, with a rotating keypad, dual cameras, dual-SIM, FM tuner, and analog TV. That certainly doesn’t look too bad, does it? The screen can be rotated, unveiling its hidden keypad. This phone is currently going for $138.99, and yes, it’s a knockoff of the K-Touch X90, which is going for a cool $200. Would you be willing to get a knockoff in order to save $60?

Verizon Sees The iPad As An Opportunity To Sell Data Plans

Despite Apple once again teaming up with AT&T for the iPad’s data plan, Verizon doesn’t seem to be discouraged, especially once you take a peek at the leaked memo to its staff that’s going around the Internet. Bringing up points that AT&T’s network is “overloaded”, and that the 3G version of the iPad will cost more, the carrier is aiming to persuade users to get the Wi-Fi version of the iPad and pair it up with a device like MiFi. Of course, what the memo fails to mention is that Verizon MiFi costs you $60 a month, which is twice as much that AT&T charges for its unlimited iPad plan, so you’ll be paying more in the long run. What do you think? Are you planning to purchase an iPad with an AT&T 3G plan, or go along with Verizon’s suggestion?
It’s probably worth mentioning that MiFi gives users a personal Wi-Fi hotspot, so despite paying slightly more, you’ll be able to share the connection with your laptop (or any other Wi-Fi device) while using your iPad as well. Sprint’s Overdrive which uses WiMAX will also offer you a similar solution. You can check out our Sprint Overdrive review here.

Samsung E6 eReader announced for US

Samsung is targeting a spring release date for their E6 eReader device which will be accompanied by a Barnes & Noble partnership, although it remains to be seen whether the E6 will be successful in its own right or not. The E6 will retail for $299 according to other sources online, and at that price point you will get a slider form factor that is reminiscent of some Palm PDA models, where it comes equipped with a 6” E-ink display at 600 x 800 resolution with 8-Gray scale for easy readability regardless of whether you are indoors or out. Supported formats include E-pub, PDF/a, TXT, BMP and JPG. The integrated front speakers lets you experience Samsung’s text-to-speech (TTS) technology, although don’t be blown away by it. You will also get Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity with Samsung’s unique EmoLink technology that enables users to share content between Samsung eReader devices. Just in case its 2GB of internal memory is not enough, there is always a microSD memory card slot that further augments taht amount to 16GB. [Press Release]
