You know what’s fun? Napoleon: Total War

By Nicholas Deleon

An idea of how much I enjoyed playing The Creative Assembly’s, by way of Sega, Napoleon: Total War pretty much all weekend long: I just ordered all four parts of Max Gallo’s biography of Napoleon from Amazon France. I don’t even speak French! (Well, a very little bit, but certainly not enough to read a four-volume biography written by someone who’s a member of L’Academie française.) That’s a pretty big endorsement: the game re-kindled my interest in Napoleon so much that I bought books that I can’t even read. Wild.

Video: Wonder Boy v. Adventure Island

By John Biggs

Wow. This young lady is amazingly excited about Wonder Boy and Adventure Island, two crazy games for the Sega Master System and the NES. While I don’t think I’ve ever played Adventure Island or Wonder Boy, I did enjoy Wonder Boys and suspect that Lucky Wander Boy was based on the SMS version. So there’s [...]

Sega Zone: the Genesis with a Wiimote nobody asked for

By Donald Melanson
Sega may (sadly) be out of the hardware business itself, but like some other once mighty companies, it’s not above licensing its brand for others to use as they see fit. The latest device to emerge out of that arrangement is the Sega Zone, which takes a perfectly fine Genesis console (complete with a cartridge slot) and adds a pair of Wiimote-like controllers in an attempt to keep up with the times. To go along with those, you’ll also get 30 new games for the system (16 of which support some form of motion control), but we’re guessing most folks will quickly find themselves opting for one of the 20 classic Genesis games that come pre-loaded. Still no indication of a release for this one ’round here, but those in the UK will apparently be able to pick one up this summer for £39.95 (or about $60).

[Thanks, Mark]

Sega Ultimate Genesis Collection bringing official Genesis emulation to iPhone, pain to your wallet

By Paul Miller

After packaging and re-marketing to us our childhood over Nintendo’s Wii Virtual Console and in a multitude of other forms, Sega is putting another platform to good use in its eternal quest to make us poor: the iPhone. Due for the App Store next month, the upcoming Sega Ultimate Genesis Collection will bring together some of Sega’s existing, disparate releases for the iPhone under one roof and add a bunch more, allowing users to buy Sega Genesis games directly from the app. The first one’s free, of course (Space Harrier II), but after that you’ll be paying a decent amount for your emulation fix: Sonic is $6, Golden Axe is $5, and Ecco the Dolphin and Shining Force go for $3. The variety will undoubtedly grow over time, but we would hope that at some point Sega will offer some sort of discounted megabundle, since you can currently get 49 notable Sega titles for around $20 in the form of Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Basically: we’re not sure if this is all supposed to make us worse or better about jailbreaking.

And if your current job requires you to give away business cards from time to time, this new business card holder that’s shaped like Sega’s legendary 16-bit console might be the right thing for you.

Chinese Dreamcast portable mod may inspire KIRFs, or already is one

By Richard Lai
You thought the DreamTrooper would be the last portablized Sega Dreamcast mod you’d ever see? Nah. Turns out some folk in China quietly showed off an Oriental take on the mod — not too dissimilar from the form factor of the GameBoy Advance — just before the DreamTrooper’s debut. Details are thin here, but we’re hoping for a built-in optical drive and a decent battery life. If we’re lucky, some KIRF makers might pick up this idea and revive the legendary Dreamcast brand, so don’t go selling your dusty game collection on eBay just yet. Go ahead and watch some The King of Fighters action after the break. We know the Swirl still captivates your heart.

PSP Go turned into a homebrewed Sega CD emulator (video)

By Vladislav Savov

At this point, there have been so many Sonic games on so many different platforms, that you don’t really need to run an old school Sega Genesis or Sega CD to play with the blue hedgehog. Need, however, is not what this is about. A fellow calling himself Neon (whose real name is presumably Thomas Andersonn) has put together a proof of concept video to show off a custom PSP Go firmware capable of running Sega CD images. Alas, he’s only keen to prove said concept for bragging rights alone, and there are no plans to unleash this unto the retro-loving world, but isn’t it enough to know that you can bring back all those memories of an insecure youth whiled away in a poorly lit room with a 12MHz console pushing about 200 pixels in total? Of course it is, check the video after the break.

Ferrari-styled OutRun arcade machine set for crazy scooter transformation? (video)

By Tim Stevens
Ferrari-styled OutRun arcade machine set for crazy scooter transformation? (video)
If you’re a child of the ’80s and a gamer to boot you surely remember OutRun, the game that rocked a generation with only some parallax effects and pixelated blonde hair — though the giant arcade cabinet with gold wheels certainly didn’t hurt. Now “contemporary artist” Garnet Hertz (creator of the twitching, crunchy frog server) is proposing to give that very cabinet a new lease on life, and a motorized one at that. Hertz wants to take an arcade machine and merge it with an EVT America Electric Trike, making those stylized five-spoke rims actually move. But that’s only half of it. He plans to power the display with an iPhone 3GS and use it to render a sort of halcyon 16-bit view of the world ahead, with every road a 64-color dream lined with palm trees. A recent video showing off some of the tech is embedded below, and while we think this is about as likely to turn a wheel as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cabinet is to travel in time, we’ll certainly be first in line with four quarters if it ever does.

Sega lighters: smoking will never be cool again

By Laura June

Lighters are more often than not outside the scope of our coverage here at Engadget, and while we don’t condone smoking or lighting anything on fire… well, these are just awesome. Banpresto’s launched a pre-order of these two beautiful Zippo-style lighters, a Sega Mega Drive and a Sega Saturn which runs through November 6th, with a shipping date sometime in December. Each lighter runs ¥10,500 (around $115). We’ll definitely keep our eyes peeled for more of these smokers.

SNES / Sega Genesis USB cartridge adapter now available for pre-order

By Joseph L. Flatley

Looks like our old friend, Matthias — the developer of the USB SNES cart reader — is back on the scene, and this time he’s going commercial. His newest project, Snega2USB, adds Sega Genesis, read and write for battery-backed SNES games, open source firmware, and up to four gamepads to the homebrew fave of classic gaming fanatics world o’er. This is a work-in-progress, but all the pieces are in place to have all orders met on the December, 2009 street date. Pre-orders will be taken until October 31 for $90 in the United States or €75 in Europe. Video after the break.
