Sony opens idyllic new retail store in Nagoya, Japan
We heard back in January that Sony was looking to reface itself somewhat by introducing a minty fresh retail look that takes a note or two from the Apple and Microsoft shops already in existence, and for those lucky enough to find themselves in Nagoya this weekend, you can check it out in person. March 13th marked the opening of the all new Sony Store Nagoya, and with an ample of amount of glass, white demo stands and black overhead signs, it’s certainly one of the more seductive retail shops that we’ve seen. We’d bother knocking Sony for following instead of leading, but considering just how far the brand has fallen over the past couple of years, we’re just stoked to see it putting forth an effort to turn things around.

PlayStation Move Only Needs 1-2MB Of System Memory

The PlayStation Move certainly looks like an interesting device, though we’re fairly sure that many of you out there are wondering how demanding it will be on the console hardware, after all, we wouldn’t want to be stuck with laggy games, right? Well, it seems that there is good news, as in a recent interview, Sony Worldwide Studios VP, Scott Rohde, mentioned that the overhead of the PlayStation Move is insignificant, and the folks over at Joystiq are indicating that the figure is about 1-2MB of RAM, which is certainly good news, especially since the PS3 only has about 256MB of RAM, albeit fast XDR memory. PlayStation Move requires only 2MB of RAM, developers breathe sigh of relief
While it’s a crying shame that Sony’s PlayStation Move won’t have full four-player support, at least the technology is efficient; our buddies at Joystiq are reporting that the camera-and-wand based motion control game system will only minimally impact game performance. Quizzing Sony’s David Coombes, they found out that the advanced image processing required to make sense of your wild, flailing movements will take only 1-2 MB of RAM. Of course, when you consider that the PS3 has only 256MB of fast XDR memory to begin with, that 2MB isn’t as “insignificant” as Sony would have you believe, but coupled with the company’s claim that the whole shebang takes “under a frame” of the Cell CPU’s processing time, we’re inclined to think it won’t be much of an issue for the end user. Sony S Series Walkmans Get The Disney Treatment

If you’re a Disney and Sony fan, this will probably have you drooling uncontrollably. Sony Japan has officially announced its new Sony Walkman S series (NW-S740/S740K/S640/S640K Series) that come emblazoned with Mickey and Minnie mouse characters at the back. There will be three versions available, Mickey only, Minnie only, and the couple together. There are also two accessories up for grabs, which are a case ($18), and a Mickey phone stand ($29). The devices mentioned here are currently available at Sony Style (Japan).

17,618: That’s how many PSP Go Sony sold in Japan in 2010

Last month, we reported that according to some rumors in the industry, Sony is seriously considering relaunching their portable gaming device, the PSP Go, with a price cut and marketing campaign. And today, Tokyo-based research firm Media Create released [JP] the latest hardware sales numbers for Japan, one of the biggest video game markets in the world.
And these numbers indicate that sales-wise, the PSP Go is poised to go down as the biggest failure in recent video gaming history.
Sony Japan announces Disney-themed Walkmans

In September last year, Sony rolled out the S Series Walkman, portable audio and video players, which are supposed to compete with the iPod Nano. And today, Sony in Japan announced [JP] a branded version of those Walkmans, namely the “Disney Character S Series Walkman”. To be more exact, Sony introduced nine Disney-themed Walkmans, a special case and a Mickey Mouse stand.

Yesterday we brought you pictures of the touchscreen-loving user interface on Sony’s genre-straddling camera concept, so what better way to improve on that than with video and a few specs? Beyond the break you shall find one of those excessively stylized promotional vids you know and love to hate, but tolerating the fluff with reward you with some nice hints about how the shooter is operated plus finally some word on what’s inside. An Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor is touted, along with the accompanying capability to shoot 1080p AVCHD video. While we still find the design of these interchangeable lens cameras ridiculously appealing, there is one thing we have to complain about and that’s the clunky naming scheme. Please Sony, give us something sexier to call it than an “ultra-compact camera concept” — how about the Sony Beta, it comes after Alpha and is typically used to denote an unfinished product. You can have that one for free.

PlayStation Move will offer limited four player support
So you do your research, you read up on everything important about the PS3’s new Move controller, and you consider yourself well prepared for a future of wild merrymaking and multiplayer gaming parties. And then you find out you can’t use four full sets of controllers with your console. As it turns out, the PS3’s Bluetooth module is only fit to address up to seven wireless devices at a time, which poses something of a puzzler when you consider that you need a pair of Move controllers (or a Move plus a sub-controller) to get your money’s worth and four times two is, well, a number greater than seven. Perturbed by this, Gizmodo contacted Sony for an official response and the news gets even worse:
“Four PlayStation Move controllers can connect to a PS3 at one time (or two PlayStation Move Controllers and 2 PlayStation Move sub-controllers).”
That basically means you can have the full Move experience with only one friend, or you can share out the wands and have that tiny bit less fun with a quartet. Not a problem for the misanthropes out there — or most people really — but an important limitation to be aware of, nonetheless.

NPD: Xbox 360 wins US sales war in a downbeat February
The cosmos must clearly have approved of Microsoft’s actions over this past month, as today we’re hearing the Xbox 360 broke out of its competitive sales funk to claim the title of “month’s best-selling console” … for the first time in two years. Redmond’s own Aaron Greenberg describes it as the best February in the console’s history, with 422,000 units sold outshining the consistently popular Wii (397,900) and the resurgent PS3 (360,100 consoles shifted, which was a 30 percent improvement year-on-year). In spite of the happy campers in Redmond and Tokyo, the overall numbers for the games industry were down 15 percent on 2009’s revenues, indicating our collective gaming appetite is starting to dry up. Good thing we’ve got all those motion-sensing accessories coming up to reignite our fire.
