Mitsubishi And Pioneer Partner To Produce OLED Lighting Panels

Mitsubishi And Pioneer Partner To Produce OLED Lighting Panels

Mitsubishi Chemical and Pioneer look like they’re placing a lot of importance on printable OLED lighting, as they’ve both formed a strategic partnership and plan to begin full-scale mass production with a launch of illumination appliances in 2011. They plan to start off with a 14cm square lighting panel, which is currently the world’s largest mass production OLED lighting panel, and the panels will be produced with printable hole injecting material (HIM) and new emitting materials. Pioneer has also issued Mitsubishi 600 million Yen in new stock through third-party allotment, so this is certainly a good way to show commitment to a partnership, eh?

AT&T’s LG eXpo pico projects itself right out of stock, production problems to blame?

By Chris Ziegler

As Windows Mobile 6.5-based handsets go, LG’s eXpo unquestionably stands near the top of the pile thanks to its WVGA display, 1GHz Snapdragon core, and optional pico projector hump for the rear — but there’s a problem: it’s really, really hard to find. Nigh impossible, actually, especially now that AT&T has pulled it off its online store altogether (it had been showing out of stock for weeks anyway). The reason for that isn’t entirely clear — LG and AT&T are happy to cite “strong demand,” naturally, but the company that supplies the eXpo’s fingerprint sensor says there are actually some outstanding antenna problems that have the production line backlogged. So when’s it coming back? “Soon,” according to LG, but in this business we’ve seen “soon” mean anything from a few minutes to a few years, so that doesn’t mean much — and in the meantime, we’re thinking T-Mobile’s HD2 stands to eat its lunch.

[Thanks, Luda]

Dell Adamo XPS removed from system

By Ubergizmo

Dell Adamo XPS removed from system

Strange as it might sound, Dell’s Adamo XPS is no longer available in the company’s system for those living Stateside, although it is still available in the UK via Dell’s exclusive retail deal with John Lewis, although there were just seven units left in stock about an hour back. This is rather strange considering the system shipped just in December. We are curious to know what Dell has up their sleeves though.

Update 3/8 3pm PT: Dell has informed us that you might still find the Adamo XPS at BestBuy.com and in select BestBuy stores. The Adamo XPS is seen by Dell as a “limited edition”, and they told us that future Adamo products would be introduced in the future.

FirstView’s $95 Android / Windows CE PC607V tips a craptablet iceberg at CeBIT

By Joanna Stern

Doesn’t look too bad for a $95 Android tablet, huh? Well, there’s plenty more where that came from. Scattered along the main halls of CeBIT are dozens of Chinese and Taiwanese consumer electronics resellers looking to sell products to new customers, and this year they sure loaded up the suitcases with cheap Android / Windows CE tablets. For the most part all these tablets (or small smartbooks) have ARM 9 or 11 processors and 5 to 7-inch resistive touch displays. While some like the FirstView PC607V tablet (pictured above) have attractive skins on top of Windows CE, others from companies like Forsa and Huawei have gone with stock versions of Android. In truth, all of the ones we played with felt chintzy, but it was easier to lower our standards when we learned they wouldn’t draw more than $150 from our wallets. We’ve got a hands-on video with FirstView’s Android tablet after the break, but if that doesn’t fill your cheap tablet needs hit the more coverage links for videos by some serious Android / ARM tablet lovers.

Apple shares hit record high on iPad shipping announcement

By Nilay Patel

Note to Microsoft, HP, Dell, and whoever else wants to get in the next-gen tablet game: your concepts are nice — even spectacular, in the case of Courier — but Apple’s about to actually ship a product, and investors are taking note. AAPL shares hit a record high of $219.36 this afternoon after the news that iPad pre-orders would begin on March 12 with an April 3rd delivery day, and they closed at $218.95, which is up around four percent. That’s got us curious: given the choice between actually purchasing the iPad and twiddling your thumbs waiting for unannounced, unpriced, and even possibly un-real devices like the Dell Mini 5, the HP Slate, or the Courier, are you taking the sure thing or holding out for your vaporous dream device? Hit us up in comments — and be nice to each other, it’s the weekend.

Windows Phone 7 Series mockup changes slightly, Zune menu making a comeback? (update: nope!)

By Nilay Patel

So Microsoft’s Charlie Kindel posted up a long blog post about Windows Phone 7 Series and app development just now, and we couldn’t help but notice the WP7S device mockup he used is noticeably different from the stock press shots we’ve been seeing and the actual devices we’ve gotten to play with. That’s a totally different hardware trim, for starters, and there’s a Zune-like menu on the right– on the builds we’ve seen scrolling to the right reveals the app list. And that map on the bottom has been moved up a couple rows from where we’ve seen it on demo builds — which is unfortunate because it’s so wildly ugly in comparison to the rest of the 7 Series interface. Now, this could actually be an older mockup, not a newer one, so we’re not reading too much into this, but it’s clear that Microsoft is still making a ton of tweaks to the WP7S interface as time goes on — hopefully we’ll see some final results at MIX.

Update: Charlie confirms that this is an older mockup. Sorry, Zune fans.

Eco Friendly Sony Ericsson Naite Listed On Sony Style

Eco Friendly Sony Ericsson Naite Listed On Sony Style

We previously brought the eco-friendly Sony Ericsson Naite to your attention, and now it seems that the phone is ready for prime time, as it’s now available on the Sony Style website (albeit “out of stock” at time of writing). This unlocked and unsubsidized phone will set you back $159, which might seem a little steep for such a phone, but considering that it’s made of 50 percent post-consumer recycled plastic, and comes with an low power consumption charger, you’ll be doing your bit for the environment.

AT&T CEO: iPad will be mostly used on WiFi, won’t drive many new 3G subscriptions

By Vladislav Savov

We all know by now that AT&T has secured the rights to furnish US iPad owners with 3G connectivity, but apparently the market desire for that service won’t be quite as big as we might have expected. That comes straight from Randall Stephenson himself, AT&T CEO and eternal believer in the power of i-branded devices, so it may have some legitimacy to it. Surely Randall’s dearest wish would be to announce his network is about to be overwhelmed by new subscribers, and the rather cooler news has already caused a small dint in AT&T’s stock price. Then again, this is hardly shocking news given that 3G on the iPad can be had on a month-by-month basis without contract, and in truth any subscriptions related to it would have to be achieved by AT&T’s own ingenuity — which, judging by its CEO’s comments, won’t be suffering any undue exertions any time soon. Not only that, Randall’s also taken the opportunity to advise us that higher data rates are likely for intensive users of unlimited 3G data plans — whether on the iPad or on smartphones. Way to endear yourself to the masses, dude.

Nokia adds Skype to Ovi Store, foreshadows death of regular phone calls

By Vladislav Savov

Skype for Symbian. A freely downloadable application that allows you to converse with your Skype-equipped friends over a WiFi or 3G connection. Seriously, why would you ever make another cellular call again? Nokia’s just announced the addition of the online communications client to its Ovi Store, meaning that now more than 200 million users worldwide have access to essentially free calls over their beloved Symbian S60 5th handsets. You knew there was a reason to stay loyal to that stale user experience and here it is. There’s not much else to say here, we’re off to sell whatever stock we have in mobile network operators while you should click the source links for the full list of compatible handsets. High fives all around.

Virgin Mobile USA To Kill Their Postpaid Service On May 25th

By Greg Kumparak

According to a series of tips I just received from multiple trusted sources, Virgin Mobile USA is planning to shut down the post-paid chunk of their wireless services on May 25th, 2010.

You see, there once was a little wireless carrier called Helio. Bringing over all kinds of crazy sliding what-nots from South Korea, they tried their damnedest to offer the coolest cell phones on the block. They also bled money like a busted spigot, burning $710 million before they were ready to call it quits. In June of 2008, Virgin Mobile (who then offered solely pre-paid wireless) came along and snatched up Helio for $39 million in stock, primarily to serve as a foundation for their then non-existent postpaid service.

A great plan, until Sprint acquired Virgin Mobile just a year later, primarily for their pre-paid service.

Analyst: iPad could be delayed until April

By John Biggs

It begins: Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek is harshing on all our buzzes by announcing that according to an unidentified source at Hon Hai Precision, a CE manufacturer, the iPad could be delated until April. The source said that there were only 300K units available for a March launch, which may put a damper on what we’re calling iPad Awareness Month.

He expects Apple to sell about 1.2 million units in 2010 and 3.5 million in 2011.
