Great Long Brother Gives The P88 An OS X Makeover

You might remember the Great Long Brother for its rather interesting name, or the fact that it tried to sue Apple over the iPad’s design. Now it seems that the relationship between the two companies aren’t going to get any better as the Chinese manufacturer has given its P88, the device in the center of the storm, a UI makeover. A quick glance in the P88’s direction will give you the impression that it’s running OS X, though in reality it’s still powered by Microsoft’s Windows 7, albeit skinned very well to look like OS X. It’ll be interesting to see if this affects Great Long Brother’s legal case against Apple’s iPad.

Neuralieve could end headache misery for some

Neuralieve could end headache misery for some

Suffering from headaches and migraines is no joke as you might look fine from the outside, but actually have a whole nuclear bomb going on under the noggin’. The Neuralive device could be the answer to prayers of millions worldwide, as a recent trial of the Headache Management System dud offer a significant reduction of pain in around 40% of test patients compared to 22% for the placebo. How is this possible? Well, a pulse of energy is injected into the ‘electrical storm’ in the brain which presages a major headache, where it will stop it from getting any worse. A classic case of prevention is better than cure here. Never mind if it doesn’t stop your headache – just don’t make it worse.

MeeGo repository going public later this month, coming to Nokia N900

By Chris Ziegler

Valtteri Halla — Nokia employee and one-half of MeeGo’s Technical Steering Group — has blogged up a storm this week about the first baby steps that’ll get the platform off the ground from its Moblin and Maemo roots, and from the sounds of things, we’ll be able to get our first glimpse at it on production hardware before the month’s out. Currently, the plan is to open up MeeGo’s code repository to all comers “by the end of this month,” targeting both Atom boards and the N900. Now, we certainly wouldn’t say that MeeGo’s decision to use the N900 as an early target device is indicative of an official upgrade down the line — but this is particularly interesting in light of the fact that we’ve never gotten a commitment out of Nokia to bump its latest MID to Maemo 6. And besides, considering that the average N900 customer is a bit of a hacker in his or her own right, let’s be honest: a code repository that supports the phone is just about as good as an official gold build anyhow.

More BlackBerry slider pics appear — is this the next Bold?

By Joshua Topolsky

What looked like a drizzle last night seems to be turning into a full on downpour. The folks over at BlackBerry Leaks have gotten themselves even more facetime with that mysterious BlackBerry slider device — and it looks a lot better than we thought. Right now the theories are flying about just exactly what kind of phone this is, with BBL suggesting it might be the next phone in the Storm family, while Kevin over at CrackBerry has it on good authority that this new handset will be part of the Bold line. Kevin also says that the rumors he’s heard on this device call for a 360 x 480 touchscreen display (sans SurePress) and expectations for BlackBerry OS 6.0 to be onboard. The pictured phone apparently has a battery issue which is keeping it from powering up, but hopefully someone will find a way to spark this thing to life and we can get some more solid info. For now, check out one more pic after the break.

Verizon suffering ‘nationwide’ data outage (update: fixed)

By Tim Stevens

Verizon suffering 'nationwide' data outageHaving a little trouble checking in on your tweeps this morning on your Droid? Is your new Pre Plus not syncing with Facebook, or your Storm2 acting a little too calm? The problem seems to lie with Verizon, which is suffering from a “nationwide” data outage at the moment. The reason we keep putting that in quotes is because we in NY are not affected (our Droid is connecting just fine) but Verizon representatives have confirmed the issue, while people in various places all over the US are unable to connect according to the forums we’ve been perusing this morning. Verizon indicated it does not have an ETA for when things will be fixed and, sadly, it doesn’t have any status message on its site, but we’d advise not calling and bothering the support folks about this — based on how long we were on hold we’re guessing they have their hands full at the moment.

Update: We’re hearing that things are popping back online for most folks, so enjoy a little 3G with your morning cuppa.

Update 2: According to this official tweet the problem has been resolved: “VZW resolves early AM data issue that involved parts, not all, of eastern US: mix of some out, slower service, many unaffected from 4-8 AM.” So, if you’re still out, the time has come to hit up those customer service agents.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Leaked Picture Of Upcoming BlackBerry Slider Phone?

Leaked Picture Of Upcoming BlackBerry Slider Phone?

While you can’t really confirm the authenticity of this picture, this is apparently a leaked picture of the upcoming BlackBerry slider phone, possibly the Storm 3. Rumors of a BlackBerry slider phone have been floating around for some time now, and we’ve mentioned the possibility to you before, but seeing a leaked picture seems to add a whole new excitement level to it, wouldn’t you think? Of course, this might just be another fancy Photoshop job, so you might want to take it with a pinch of salt, but if the final product were to look something like this, would you want one?

PlanetSolar boat runs off the sun

By Ubergizmo

PlanetSolar boat runs off the sun

The PlanetSolar boat is tipped to make her maiden round-the-world journey sometime next year after taking 13 months to build. It measures around 102 feet long, almost 50 feet wide and stands 24-1/2 feet high, and while this is not the biggest boat in the world, it is the largest where solar-powered vessels are concerned. Hopefully there is a backup power source of sorts just in case you sail through a week-long storm without any sun in sight.

Verizon Wireless could discontinue BlackBerry Storm

By Ubergizmo
Verizon Wireless could discontinue BlackBerry Storm

Word on the grapevine has it that Verizon Wireless will be dropping the iconic BlackBerry Storm smartphone from its lineup, mainly because the smartphone has an unexceptionally high level of returns – optimists prefer to say that Verizon is paving the way for a new device instead. Should Verizon go ahead with this decision, it could potentially hurt RIM significantly, since Verizon is currently the largest official retailer of BlackBerry Storm handsets. There is no official statement from either RIM or Verizon, so we’ll have to wait for someone to burst open their dams.

Amazon rolls out Kindle App for BlackBerry

Amazon rolls out Kindle App for BlackBerry

Amazon has just released a brand new Kindle application for BlackBerry which will enable customers to purchase as well as read e-books on their smartphones. This application is similar to the company’s application for both the iPhone and iPod touch, and for folks who already own the Kindle, one is able to synchronize the BlackBerry application with it, letting you continue reading where you last left off regardless of which device you use to read. This free download will support only newer BlackBerry models (Curve 8520 and 8900, Tour 9630, Bold 9000 and 9700, and Storm 9500, 9530, and 9550). Apart from that, Kindle is also working on a Mac and iPad (!) version of Kindle – it would be interesting to see what Apple has to say about their iPad competitor’s app though.

Digital Storm Black Ops gaming rig is exactly what you expect

By Donald Melanson
Sure, there might not be too many surprises with a completely customizable gaming rig called “Black Ops” from high-end manufacturer Digital Storm, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. This latest rig naturally adds the latest Core i7 processors as options, along with ATI 5970 graphics, and Digital Storm’s own Sub-Zero Liquid Cooling System, which promises to handle your overclocked processors and graphics cards with ease. You’ll also get your choice of four different, equally intimidating-looking chassis, and a fairly generous three-year warranty (even on overclocked machines). Prices obviously vary quite a bit depending on the configuration, but the standard “Extreme” rig will set you back $3,102.

Digital Storm BlackOPS computer looks sleek and cool

Digital Storm BlackOPS computer looks sleek and cool

If Darth Vader had to use a PC, then he would most probably have settled for the Digital Storm BlackOPS computer. Made from black aluminum, this liquid cooled machine will come in a choice of three configurations, with prices starting from $1,709. At that price point, you get a 2.66GHz Core i5-750 processor, while the high end side of things which cost a whopping $3,100 will feature a 3.2GHz Intel Core i7-960 processor, up to 6GB DDR3 RAM, and a choice between the NVIDIA GTX 275 or ATI Radeon HD 5860 1GB graphic card. We wonder what he would have done to the programmers who rolled out Windows Vista though.
