Qualcomm foldable touchscreen tablet patent

Qualcomm foldable touchscreen tablet patent

Qualcomm has a patent filing of theirs published today which points toward a possible foldable touchscreen tablet. This device will merge a trio of touchscreen displays into a single device, where its interface will change depending on the context. When fully folded, it will function just like a standard cellphone, and when unfolded to its full glory, it will have a variety of roles, depending on the position of each individual display. While this is does not necessarily indicate an actual device, a finished product is still possible.

Video Demo: Google Reader Play is clearly meant for a tablet computer

By Matt Burns

We all know that there will be an onslaught of touchscreen computers this year and next. But the Internet really isn’t touchscreen friendly. It was designed for a mouse, not finger input. Google Reader Play is one of the early examples of a site redesigned for this sort of navigation with a slideshow-type interface and larger buttons.

I loaded up the demo on a Viliv X70 tablet computer and found it works quite well on the 9-inch tablet. The buttons could be a bit larger, but overall it’s one of the most touchscreen-friendly websites I’ve seen. Click through for a quick video demo.

Sony’s ultra-compact concept camera gets slightly less mysterious

By Donald Melanson

We didn’t exactly get the best look at Sony’s new ultra-compact concept camera at PMA last month, but the company is now thankfully starting to reveal a few more details about the “DSLR quality” camera. Still nothing in the way of specs or an actual working camera, of course, but Sony has provided a few screenshots of the camera’s menu system that at least provide a few tidbits of information. Most notably, it seems that the camera will employ a touchscreen interface, with most of the main controls handled by a menu on the side of the screen, and it looks like the camera will have a RAW + JPEG shooting mode, which should no doubt please more serious photographers. Hit up the link below for a few more screenshots.

[Thanks, Julien]

By Ubergizmo

With the slew of tablets as well as iPad wannabes rolling out from China these days, the law of probability points toward a winner through the plethora of candidates, and perhaps one that might just edge out the iPad in terms of popularity? Perhaps in another lifetime, but kudos to Hott for their MD500 which is powered by the Android operating system. This tablet sports a 4.8″ touchscreen display that was specially customized to function with the ARM9 Rockchip processor, featuring full video playback support, a minimal screen bezel and interesting Android customizations.

Huawei announces SmaKit S7 Android tablet

By Laura June

When we first spied Huawei’s SmaKit S7 Android tablet, we were at CeBit and it was… well, non-functioning. Now Huawei’s officially announced the tablet now, and we have to say that it looks just like every other Android tablet being hoisted upon the world these days, but it’s got some nice features that make it worth a second gander. The 7-incher boasts an 800 x 480 pixel resolution, 720p playback, 3G connectivity, plus a dock with HDMI out, two USB 2.0 ports, and two microSDHC slots. The tablet, which runs the 1.6 version of the OS, will supposedly be available this summer, though we don’t yet have any information about where it will be available or how much it will cost. We’ll let you know as soon as we do — but in the meantime, there’s a video demo after the break.

LG shows off new phones in the Netherlands

LG shows off new phones in the Netherlands

LG decided to take a Dutch holiday and showcase a bunch of new handsets at the Netherlands, where they are the LG Cookie Music KM570 (as pictured), LG Pure, LG GT405, LG KS365 and LG Jacquar 5. The LG Cookie Music does resemble the Rogers-bound LG KM555 a whole lot, although it has more advanced features such as a 5-megapixel camera, 4GB of internal memory, Dolby Mobile technology, HSDPA connectivity and a 3.5mm headset jack. As for the touchscreen-capable LG GT405, this model sports HSDPA connectivity, 3D S-Class UI, stereo FM radio and a 5-megapixel camera. The slider LG Pure is pretty much the same as the LG GT405, although it misses out on the touchscreen display and comes in a different form factor. As for the LG KS365, this model seems to be a redesigned version of the LG KS360. The LG Jacquar 5 might sound phonetically luxurious, but this simple candybar is equipped with a VGA camera and other basic media features. Which of these do you like best?

Toshiba will have its own family of slates by this time next year

By Vladislav Savov

Before the iPad and before the Slate, the most exciting touchy tablety thing in our lives was Toshiba’s JournE multimedia tablet. Now that the Japanese compu-maker has seen what the competition has on offer, it’s proudly proclaimed itself back in the running with an entire family of slate devices it’s planning to introduce near the end of 2010 or in early 2011. “It has proved to be a mistake to underestimate these new categories” is the word from Toshiba’s Jeff Barney, which indicates that not even he sees that much potential in the form factor, but his company is pushing ahead with its plans for fear of being left behind. Also quoted in the Fortune piece is ASUS’ inimitable Jonney Shih, who makes sure to remind us that without multitasking, Flash support, or a webcam for videoconferencing, the iPad leaves plenty of room for devices richer in features to grab market share. All we know for certain is that the major players are falling in line to make 2010 truly the year of tablet — whether or not consumers will place their stamp of approval on this vendor-driven craze, though, remains to be seen.

Pioneer DJM-2000 digital mixer sports multitouch screen, per-frequency mixing delight

By Sean Hollister

Ready to graduate from DJ Hero? Got a house payment handy? Then Pioneer would like to show you the way to the pros. Say hello to the DJM-2000, a four-channel digital mixer built around a 5.8-inch multitouch screen and sporting enough knobs, buttons and sliders for a NASA launch sequence. Designed to play nice with the matching CDJ-2000 players Pioneer released last year, the unit features an integrated audio effects suite with six dedicated processors and several intriguing modes for multitouch music control. While the mixer has the traditional crossfade slider that allows DJs to assign a certain percentage of the output to channels on the left and right, the DJM-2000 debuts with “frequency mix,” a mode that lets DJs assign within seven narrow frequency bands as well by manipulating virtual sliders on the touchscreen, and a “sidechain remix” mode that uses the screen to apply custom effects in real time. Yeah, it’s not as wild as some other touchscreen DJ rigs we’ve seen, but at least this one’s for sale: Pioneer says the mixer will retail for $3000 this June. Droolworthy video demonstrations after the break.

JooJoo revamps interface ahead of launch, adds local video playback — and changes color

By Nilay Patel

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/JooJoo_gets_a_sexy_new_interface_adds_features’; The JooJoo tablet’s launch date might have been pushed back a month while Fusion Garage sorts out issues with the capacitive touchscreen, but it looks like the extra time has given the company a chance to tweak the interface and add in some features. Obviously the most noticable change is the revised homescreen, which has gone from line art on a garish solid color background to a nicely rendered icon grid over a high-res customizable wallpaper, but Fusion Garage has also ditched the confusing pinch-to-go-back gesture and replaced it with a vertical swipe that brings down a status bar containing the home button, status indicators, browser navigation controls, and a combination address bar / search field. Scroll behavior has been revised as well, with two separate behaviors: a two-finger scroll that works like a scroll wheel, and a single finger “pan” that works like a mouse arrow. That’s so you can move around sites like Google Maps, which have different interface elements mapped to each control — CEO Chandra Rathakrishnan pointed out to us that devices like the iPhone avoid the issue by using dedicated apps, but Fusion Garage wants to deliver the “full web experience.” It’s an interesting solution and a clever spin on things, but we’re waiting to try it out for real before we pass any judgment.

What else? The text-entry situation has been improved: there’s now both a smaller keyboard designed for one-handed operation that can be moved around the screen so it doesn’t obscure content, and a full-screen multitouch keyboard that does chording so it recognizes more than one key at a time. There’s no auto-correction or prediction, though. Flash is now fully working, and YouTube videos can either be played back using Flash or the custom H.264 HD breakout player we’ve already seen; that player supports a range of codecs and can also be used to play videos stored on a USB thumb drive. And finally, and perhaps most oddly, the JooJoo has changed colors. Instead of black, the back casing is now a “champagne” color, a picture of which you can see below — Chandra told us that unhappy preorder customers can just have their $499 refunded if they desperately wanted black instead. All we desperately want to do is get a review unit and tell you what the JooJoo is actually like to use — if all of these promises hold up, it could be very intriguing indeed.

Pioneer DJM-2000 mixer

By Ubergizmo
Pioneer DJM-2000 mixer

Pioneer has just launched its DJM-2000 mixer today, where it will come with the seemingly customary touchscreen display in many devices these days. Apart from that, you will also be able to benefit from half a dozen individual effects processors. Basically, this model contains all of the built-in technology of the EFX-1000, hence doing away with the need for an external effects unit. Pioneer has enlisted the help of James Zabiela, Roger Sanchez, Eddie Halliwell, Tom Middleton, The Swedish House Mafia, Paul Woolford, John ‘00′ Fleming and Kutski DJs during different parts of its development before settling on the final version which will set you back by €1,999.

Dell Mini 10v hacked with touchscreen display

By Ubergizmo

Dell Mini 10v hacked with touchscreen display

Check out this Dell Mini 10v that has been hacked to include a touchscreen display instead of the regular one, giving you access to its icons with but a single tap instead of double clicking. Using an $85 kit from Hoda, it is unfortunate that none of the cables packaged with the display would work with the Mini 10v’s innards, so it required some tinkering on Weathejx’s part to get it working thanks to reassembled parts from a USB hub. It took a few attempts of reassembling the Mini 10v before it could get going. Definitely not for the faint hearted!
